It ain't getting any easier folks!

One would hope USC would be feeling a let down after the Oregon game, but they have so much talent. Their receivers are freakishly good and will be a big challenge for our secondary. We will have to get to Barkley early and often to stay in this, and odds are we will get burned for some big plays. Hopefully, Taylor and the offense can be more productive than last week.

On the way home, the radio was all abuzz about how the USC football team manager must have been instructed by Kiffin to deflate the balls that the USC offense was using so it would be easier to throw, catch, etc. Don't recall if it was ESPN or Fox Sports NW.

This is turning into a real soap opera, but Kiffin is saying that the manager acted alone. http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/ncf/...-says-manager-deflating-footballs-acted-alone

"That didn't stop some from thinking Kiffin was behind it. The coach repeatedly has searched for small competitive advantages in his three-year tenure with the Trojans. He has switched players' numbers on special teams to confuse opponents, has refused to disclose injuries during game weeks, and has motivated his players in the preseason by telling the media he had not voted his team No. 1."

http://www.latimes.com/sports/colle...schke-usc-footballs-20121109,0,6907619.column

"Nothing to do with the coaches or players on this team? That's a tough one to swallow. Who among us can actually believe that, in a giant and glittery program like USC's, a student manager would illegally alter a piece of game equipment on his own? If there truly existed a student manager with that kind of guts, shouldn't he be playing defense?"

My prediction: ASU will win the game of heart, an undersized team overachieving against a more physical, deep and talented team. But on the scoreboard, USC will make more big plays, to offset the big penalty advantage in favor of ASU.

Score:
USC: 45
ASU: 31

Interesting, USC WR Marquise Lee may see some time at safety against ASU
http://www.latimes.com/sports/colle...arizona-state-matchup-20121110,0,142422.story

And this sure sounds encouraging:

And, perhaps most significant, Arizona State runs a spread offense, the type of attack that has proved nearly impossible for the Trojans to contain in their last two games.

By now, the numbers are imprinted in the minds of reporters, players, coaches and fans: 101 points and 1,318 yards. That's what USC's defense gave up in losses to Arizona and to Oregon.

Kiffin said the Trojans have not played well on defense for the last "5 1/2 quarters."

"We're not causing people issues," he said. "Especially last week, you saw a lot of missed tackles."

Monte Kiffin, USC's assistant head coach for defense, said the Trojans went over the Oregon tape on Sunday and had worked through the emotional fallout by midweek.

"You talk to your squad, you get 'em back," he said, adding that Oregon, for the time being, was in the past and "you better be talking about Arizona State."

The Sun Devils feature quarterback Taylor Kelly and running backs Cameron Marshall, Marion Grice and D.J. Foster. The defense is led by lineman Will Sutton.

These aren't Dennis Erickson's undisciplined Sun Devils.

Arizona State has gone from being college football's most penalized team in 2011 to having the seventh fewest penalties among 120 teams.

Meanwhile, USC has supplanted the Sun Devils at No. 120.

So USC coaches and players said they would not look past Arizona State, even with rival UCLA coming up next week.

"We've had some tough losses," receiver Robert Woods said, "so we're trying not to slip up again."

Said defensive line coach Ed Orgeron: "We're not good enough to look past anybody."

For those of us that don't have the PAC 12 network.

This would be an amazing victory.

Feel good after this colossal disappointment of a season. They looked so promising and then just fell to pieces.

Well that was a frustrating game to watch.

We were with USC every step of the way in the first half, holding the lead most of the time. That first drive, we were running the ball right down their throats, but USC seemed to switch up and put more people in the box. Our running game was nonexistent after that.

We made some huge defensive plays and created turnovers, including a pick 6, and a diving interception by Chris Young preventing a touchdown, that you normally would see in a signature victory.

But in the second half, our offense just couldn't stay on the field. And so our defense ultimately wore out and folded under USC's big guns. Taylor just keeps making mistakes, poor pass protection, no passing game down the field, and the big killer PREDICTABILITY. ASU's offense just looks very predictable down the stretch. They just seem to run the same stuff over and over and the defense knows it.

Next week, our competition takes a step back with WSU and we have a winnable game at home if we can cut down the turnovers. But unless the offense gets back on track, I am not seeing how we score enough points to stay on the field against Arizona.

Just like us you guys just have way too many holes on the depth chart due to recruiting failures by previous staffs. I said before the season that both programs should consider any sort of a bowl game a success and it looks like we'll both get there. You guys had the tease of starting off 5-1 but let's be honest that was almost 100% due to scheduling.

ASU and UA aren't Ohio State, Florida, or Alabama. Hell we're not even Tennessee, UCLA, or Clemson. It takes a few years to get ramped up when you don't have tradition, money, or a glut of local highly-rated recruits at your disposal.

Seems like a lot of ASU fans are on the ledge now about this 2nd half season swoon. I'm not really sure why, I felt ASU would be 6-6 at worse this season and 8-4 at best. The UCLA loss was VERY frustrating, but other than that most of the losses have been expected.

ASU should beat WSU who's a total wreck right now. UofA in Tucson will be tough, they seem to be a totally different team at home. But, being the Rivalry game, who knows.

The ASU-UA game could be a battle for who gets to go to San Francisco instead of Albuquerque.

Exactly. Expectations were pretty low at the beginning of the year. The "fast start" got expectations unrealistically high. Overall, ASU is about where they should be expected this year. Hopefully, they will finish on a positive note.
