AUBURN — On a day when Auburn basketball saw two likely returnees for the 2025-26 season hit the transfer portal, the Tigers showed portal season never stops, picking up their fourth addition of the offseason.
ROSTER TRACKER: Who's in, out following Auburn basketball's 2024-25 season
Former Texas Tech guard Kevin Overton announced his commitment to Bruce Pearl and Auburn on Thursday afternoon, hours removed from both Chad Baker-Mazara and AD Scott announcing their departures.
A rising junior, Overton is expected to have two years of eligibility remaining. He's also the fourth addition of the offseason, joining Mississippi State transfer KeShawn Murphy, UCF transfer Keyshawn Hall and JUCO standout Emeka Opurum on Auburn's 2025-26 roster.
Overton spent a single season at Texas Tech after playing his freshman year at Drake. He was largely a reserve piece for the Red Raiders, playing in 36 games but making one start. The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 7.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per contest in Lubbock, but he played a bigger role at the mid-major level.
He was the third-leading scorer on Drake's 2023-24 squad, averaging 11.3 points as a starter. He also averaged 3.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists and did so while shooting 44% from the field and 34.6% from distance.
Overton's addition is mighty welcome after the day Auburn had. Both Baker-Mazara and Scott were considered likely to return for next year, the former of which would have done so with an additional year of eligibility granted in the middle of last season. Now, Auburn will continue its quest to replace them both.
Overton's addition provides a little more stability in the backcourt, especially as Tahaad Pettiford's status for return will remain uncertain until the NBA draft process reaches its withdrawal deadline.
