Auburn softball hosted in-state rival UAB for a twin bill on Wednesday at Jane B. Moore Field in Auburn and exited with a split.
The Tigers handled business in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader by taking down the Blazers, 6-1, thanks to a strong six-inning outing in the circle by Haley Rainey and a two-hit performance by Icess Tresvik at the plate. In game two, UAB took advantage of four Auburn errors by scoring four unanswered runs in their 4-3 upset win.
Co-head coach Chris Malveaux credits UAB for taking advantage of Auburn's defensive miscues in their game two win.
“Kudos to UAB,” Malveaux said postgame. “They were able to continually hit spots in the second game. You don’t want to point fingers, but we struggled defensively where last weekend it was our defense that gave us a chance to sweep a series. UAB was able to capitalize on every single error. It’s a focus thing. We’ve got to stay locked in and take care of the ball.”
Here is a look at how Auburn's doubleheader with the UAB Blazers played out on Wednesday.
Auburn had zero issues with the Blazers in its game one victory. The Tigers scored four runs in the 3rd inning to propel them to a 6-1 win. A two-run single from Icess Tresvik and a two-out RBI double by Anna Wohlers headlined Auburn's strong offensive inning. Freshman AnnaLee Adams continued her strong season at the plate by crushing her 8th home run of the season over the left center field wall in the 7th inning to nail down the win.
Hailey Rainey allowed four hits over six innings of work in the circle, while Malayna Tamborra struck out one batter in one inning of relief.
Auburn did not have as much success in game two, thanks to a three-run 1st inning from UAB and four Auburn errors throughout the game. Ma'nia Womack and Aubrie Lisenby each logged RBI singles in the game, but it was not enough to steal the comeback win from the Blazers, falling to 4-3.
Icess Tresvik got the start in the circle, but was chased after allowing three unearned runs and recording two outs. SJ Geurin allowed one run on three hits while striking out two batters in 6 1/3 innings of relief.
Auburn will host Georgia for a three-game SEC series beginning Friday at Jane B. Moore Field. Game one of the series begins Friday at 5 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on SEC Network.
