Afternoon Blitz, Schein and Miller

Schien and Miller said we cleaned up this weekend

A breakdown -

Whiz says it was a very natural transition for him to become a head coach.

On Levi Brown -
Had Peterson and Brown at the same level. Based on his philosophy of building DLine and OLine they chose Levi Brown. Levi will play at RT at first then will try him at LT.

Thinks Oliver Ross (from memory) and Mike Gandy are solid.

Called Lutui a mauler, and likes to have Levi and Duece on one side.

---Talked about the draft for a while----

On Alan Branch -
Very early as the Cards Head Coach he thought Alan Branch might be their guy at #5. He was #12 overall on our board. Very excited to get Branch.

Says Branch will effect the opposing team's plans on offense, and knew this because of playing players like Kris Jenkins, Casey Hampton, and the Jags DT's

Thinks the reason he fell was pure speculation, and by the rumour mill going around about him. Says Cardinals didn't listen to rumours and would have picked him at 15 or 16 if they had that pick.

Thinks that basing Branch's production on his stats is ridiculous. The fact Branch pushes double teams backwards is more important than stats.

On Ben Patrick and L.Pope -
He was on our board for round #5. Whiz hopes Patrick can learn to block better cause that is what we need, and that goes for Pope as well. Thinks Pope is very talented. Note: Whiz likes 2 TE sets.

On Breaston -
Looking for him to make an immediate impact on special teams. He will be looked at to play some WR as well.

Minicamps -
Whiz is saying it is really hard for him to wait till the 12th to get with the entire team. He wants to get the players into his system as soon as he can. He say guys working hard in wieght room.

Whiz's first question he had for the Cardinals when he came in to interview -
"Why didn't win?" From the responses he got back, Whiz thinks the problem was:

We have good players at skill positions, who thought they were good enough to win games but had been given no direction what they needed to do to get better as a team.

Also, the Cardinals needed to upgrade the offensive line at nearly every position.

On Whiz's philosophy-
He chose coaches that believe in the system, and believes this causes the players will by into it. When it comes to practice he wants competition and physical practices.

About the players' thoughts on the draft -
The players excited about draft.

On Matt Leinart -
Matt Leinart is in everyday working hard, he has literally not missed a day at the office. Whiz really likes Matt as a leader, and is looking for big plays in passing game that are set up by running the football.

On other teams in division -
Not Happy. Thinks teams in our division did very well this weekend (draft) and the division got tough very quickly. He was hoping to have a year or so before it started to be as competitve as the AFC North.

That is it.

Couldn't agree more with this statement. The whole divsion has improved dramatically, imo.

I thought Seattle's draft was between below average and terrible.

That is as damning an indictment of Denny as anything else I have heard about his tenure.

Since Green helped rebuid this team, do you think they'll invite him back for a piece of pie when they turn the corner?

This guy is going to have a terrific career as a head coach. He really has his stuff together. Not a carnival barker with a bunch of "coach talk." Spending 5 years under a guy like Bill C shows...as it does with the Belicheks of the world (Parcells) or guys who coached for Walsh etc.

Even in our "storied" history we started a string during the Coryell days.

I couldn't agree more with this analysis. We cleaned house this weekend. The only pick I'm a little concerned about is Buster Davis. His size just really raises a red flag.

Ben Patrick in the 7th round is another steal of this draft. He was rated as the third best TE in the draft by a few draft sites. I thought he would be gone by the 5th round.

I just saw that Rugby started a thread with this so if a mod could merge the two it would be great.

I can't wait to see Fitz and Q on PA passes with one on one coverage, which will happen with a good rushing attack.

Thanks for the recap, Rug... and to this quote:

This guy is going to have a terrific career as a head coach

I think so, too. I'd love to be sitting here 8 years from now with him as our head coach. That would mean we've been winning and the stability at HC would be a nice change of pace.

I am going to "comment on my comment" regarding KW future. I believe he is going to have a brilliant career..hopefully here, because he is not going to make a plethora of stuipid mistakes on and off the field. He will not get "stuck in stupid." Yeah, he will goof up from time to time with personnel and bad field judgements, however I think they will be minimal. It should be fun and interesting to see this hand played out.

The ONLY problem that I had with the interview is that the Cards had entertained the thought of drafting Branch with the #5. Hopefully that idea was dashed when the they decided that he was #12 on their board.

It appears to be the case, so I may not have a problem. The recap is a bit unclear about that issue.

That is all.

I took Whiz :))) as saying Branch was the potential pick at 5 very early on, but Whiz changed his mind. I dunno.

Anywho. They rated Branch at #12. I am curious to see where a player like Russell or Quinn would have been on the Cards board. I know that they wouldn't have drafted them, but interesting nonetheless.

He would consume the whole pie to begin with, secondly, based on the performance of the FO in this draft... how much did DG really do to make us better (the record does not answer the question for me)? DG's problem was that he found 'yes men' and 'used to be' staff members who did not COACH or TEACH the so-called great draft members he took credit for...Rolle, Pope, Green and JJ are all examples of "solid picks" that did not improve under DG's staff... I say keep him as far away as possible and let him eat fish!

I see this all the time with coaches at all levels in every sport. They yell at players to do things but never actually take the time to show them how.

For example I get boys on my youth league teams who have been playing organized baseball for 4,5,6 years and have never been taught basic fundamentals.
