I don't know what to think about this

AUSTIN – Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido, who led the Longhorns to this year's national title, appears to be a candidate to replace Joe Garagiola Jr. as senior vice president and general manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Garagiola resigned Monday to become senior vice president of baseball operations for Major League Baseball.

Garrido, 66, the winningest baseball coach in Division I history and winner of five national titles (two at Texas), flew to Phoenix on July 18 to meet with Arizona general partner Jeff Moorad. At the time, both men said it was a meeting between old friends in which Moorad wanted to pick Garrido's brain about player development.

Garrido, however, said Thursday their meeting also included talks about what might happen if the Diamondbacks' GM position were to come open.

"It's kind of a compelling subject," Garrido said while vacationing in Laguna Beach, Calif. "But there was no job offer connected to it." Moorad couldn't be reached for comment Thursday.

"There is something appealing to the idea of being general manager because you can implement and impart your philosophy," Garrido said. "When you are working at the college level and observe the pro level, you're interested to see if your ideas might work."

UT athletic director DeLoss Dodds said Garrido has two years left on his deal that pays him more than $600,000 annually. Dodds said talks had already been under way to extend Garrido's contract by three years, which would give him a new five-year deal that would increase his annual salary by $50,000.

Some reports I read say he might get involved somehow in the Minor League ops - if Bob Miller was promoted, for example, perhaps, or if they resurrect Tommy Jone's role. That would be OK, but a GM is a crucial BUSINESS position, and Kendricks, Moorad, et al are not likely to give the job to someone who has no MLB connections and no FO experience.
