Absolutely love this guy, he's been doing it all since his call up. I think we might just have the fastest white baseball player in the bigs as well!! He hauls!

Don't care where he's from or the color of his skin - the kid can flat out play!!! Wow!!!

Now, if we can somehow find some consistent power at First Base (20-30 HR's) and some much needed pitching depth, this team is ready to contend!! This year is shot of course, but 2010 could be fun!

I love the kid and what the way he plays the game. However, it is a bit premature to insert him as one of the pieces of this team future.

He has a great attitude. Something this team needs. Everything I read says he has always been the nicest in the locker room and happy to be there. He has had a smile on his face since getting called up, kind of refreshing.

And once Upton comes back, Upton can move to center, Parra to LF and Oeltjen to RF. That is a decent lineup. We really just need a allstar caliber 1B for this team and some relief pitching.

yea no Upton at Center, there would be an inside the park homerun a week. Why not Oeltjen at center? he has great speed and has shown good defense so far.

My hunch is they've already got that guy in their system, Brandon Allen.

Also, the more I watch this kid, the more I like him.

4-4 last night, a homer shy of the cycle. On top of it, he has good speed (possible leadoff man?) and plays very good defense.

Let the kid pick up 200 major league at-bats before you make a judgment. Rooks always get tested with fastballs and cheap pitches first to test their baseline skills. That's why it's not uncommon for a kid to come up and suddenly blow up. Then pitchers start chipping away to find holes in their swing and a book develops.

It's never the first 20 games that a hitter shows his mettle. It's the next 50 or so when you get to see how quickly he can make adjustments.

You're right to a point Gadd. There have been plenty of rooks who did exceedingly well in their first 10, 20, 40 games... However, what Oeltjen is doing (12 for 24 with 3 HR's) is actually pushing that envelope.
He'll cool off soon of course. But his entry into the majors is most definitely "uncommon".

OK. You convinced me. He's the reincarnation of Shoeless Joe and he's going to be the only second rook in history to hit .400 in his first season.

While the HR power he has shown is probably not legit, the guy has hit around .290+ 4 times in the last 5 years in the minors and he has the gap power and speed to rip off a lot of doubles and the speed to hit some triples. I'm not expecting him to keep up anywhere near this pace, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him hit in the 280 range. Only time will tell, but I hope this kid can at least gain a part time role on our team.

.400?? Dude, he's just getting started... He's got .450 written all over him! And a Triple Crown in 2010 to boot!!!

:yeahthat:

I hope can stay in the big leagues, but it's way too soon. Hopefully he can be like Mark Reynolds. Remember when they brought him up?

Someone look at the numbers for Quentin. IIRC I called him "our Albert Pujols" on this very forum his first twenty games or so with the club.

He has one hit in his last 15 at bats

This always happens, it happened with Reynolds, Parra.... there is little scouting reports on these guys up from AA, once they get some at bats and some film on them they return to Earth
