It was a dramatic start to the 2025 Formula 1 season in Melbourne as McLaren's Lando Norris won the Australian Grand Prix in wet conditions.
Here is how the race unfolded in pictures.
There was early drama at Albert Park as Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar spun his car and crashed at Turn Two on the formation lap [EPA]
Hadjar was visibly upset after the disappointing start to his F1 debut, and the 20-year-old was consoled by Lewis Hamilton's father, Anthony, when he returned to the paddock [Getty Images]
After a short delay, Lando Norris, who started on pole, kept his McLaren ahead of team-mate Oscar Piastri and the Red Bull of Max Verstappen at the start [Getty Images]
But the slippery track continued to cause issues and Alpine rookie Jack Doohan was the next to crash out on the first lap, followed quickly by the Williams of Carlos Sainz, who dropped his car behind the safety car approaching the final corner [Getty Images]
World champion Verstappen, who had been chasing down leader Norris, gifted McLaren back their one-two after running wide at Turn 11 and allowing Piastri to go through [Getty Images]
Just past half distance, a second safety car was deployed, this time for two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, who crashed his Aston Martin at Turn Six [Getty Images]
On lap 44, both McLaren drivers spun in the wet at the penultimate corner. While Norris was able to rejoin the action, Piastri was stuck on the grass until he managed to reverse himself out of danger [Getty Images]
More trouble was to come as the rain fell, with spins for both Red Bull's Liam Lawson and Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto bringing out another safety car [EPA]
Lewis Hamilton was briefly leading the race on his Ferrari debut when a strategy gamble by the Italian team to keep the Briton and team-mate Charles Leclerc on slick tyres after others had switched to the intermediates did not pay off [Getty Images]
Pole-sitter Norris kept his cool in the tricky conditions to secure the first win of the 2025 season ahead of Verstappen and the Mercedes of George Russell [Reuters]
The top three of Norris, Verstappen and Russell celebrated on the podium in front of the thousands of fans at Albert Park - and still the rain did not let up [EPA]
After a soaking during the race, Norris had more of the same as he celebrated with the McLaren team afterwards [Reuters]
