They now think that the QB's might alternate starting between games. Jesus that is exactly why we are ranked 32 among fans. We are that dumb!!!! He said what he said about Warner starting against the 49ers as Kurt gives us the best chance to win...because he has to make sure Matt doen't get down on himself. If Warner plays above average at all he is our starter the entire year. They know that He outplayed every QB just about the last 8 games last year. They knew Warner was going to start 2 weeks ago. Can our fans just let it go...for God's sake. Warner is our starter PERIOD. Root for our team and quit trying to see the conspiracy theory in every Whiz decision.

I could have sworn you were doing this exact thing when Whis came out and said he hadnt made up his mind about the starter after Mort said he named Warner..

There were many on this board calling Whiz an idiot. I think Whiz knew a week ago that Warner was going to be his starter and I also think Whiz and Warner had their own dialog going since the end of last season.

Whiz gave Leinart a shot at proving he was BETTER than Warner (at this point) . Matt may be closer than many of us want to believe but if the 2 QB's were neck and neck the nod would HAVE to go to Warner based on experience alone.

If you are a Warner fan you are happy. If you are a Leinart fan you are probably a little disappointed. If you are a Cardinal fan you recognize what a great situation we have a the QB position.

Leinart needs to get his head on straight and be ready to play after EVERY snap. That's how quick things could change.

I support Whiz's decision and I have come to the conclusion it is the right one. This team is poised to make a run. I don't remember any Cardinal team being this ready to start a season.

Campos, yep there is speculation and it is because The Coach did not say anything like "Warner is the starter, period". He said a lot of "this week" and "in San Francisco" type of stuff. Whether I think The Coach is handling this well does not matter one bit. It is his job and I will evaluate him based on wins and losses. I beleive it is unnecessary to criticize fans for their speculations. It's what we do. Sure ESPN ranked us as #32 in quality of fans, but I will defend you and all the other fans against the Tony Kornholers and ESPN any day. You are a Cardinals' fan Campos, so am I, and so are those wondering what The Coach was talking about.

(By the way, I hope Matt gets playing time Sunday because the Cards are up by 30pts in the third quarter.)

Obviously, I was one who was very critical of Whiz's handling of the QB situation. I think that Whiz did have Warner in mind when he tabbed Warner to start pre-season game 2, seeing as Leinart played well in week one and if Leinart was indeed the intended starter, there'd be no reason to start Warner.

The context here is significant too. Because Whiz alternated between Leinart and Warner the first five weeks of the season last year, Whiz was conjuring up that same dynamic by naming Warner the starter in game two. Let's remember that Leinart wasn't all too thrilled with the arrangement last year...nor would any starting QB. Had Whiz wanted to diffuse any talk of a QB competition and/or controversy this year, he would not have started flip-flopping starting QBs in the pre-season games. So, in essence, Whiz wasn't exactly being sensitive to Leinart's psyche by again flip-flopping the two.

However...be that as it may...what threw a monkey wrench into Whiz's plans was Leinart's embarrassing performance versus the Raiders...and the subsequent national media speculation that Warner was "expected" to be named the starter. The timing of these occurrences was such that if Whiz elected to officially name Warner the starter immediately following Leinart's poor showing, that would have certainly humiliated and demoralized Leinart even further. Now Whiz IS being sensitive to Leinart's psyche.

It can be assumed that Whiz realized that the team will in all likelihood need Leinart at some point this year, and thus he had to somehow find more amenable circumstances in which to name Warner the starter. And what happened this past week could not have been more favorable, because Leinart picked himself up...was impressive with the media, even joked about making a good tackle...and went out and played his best football of the pre-season.

Whiz deserves a ton of credit for this...if and when Leinart plays next, he certainly will be in a far better frame of mind, having re-estabished his confidence level.

However, there's a potentially negative flip side to the late timing of Whiz's decision...and this is what I have been worried about and why I was so critical of the delay. Whiz, in wanting to build Leinart's confidence back up was gambling that the team and the QBs could handle the late distractions of the starting QB resolution.

I thought too, Slan, that Whiz had let Warner know privately that he was going to be named starter, so he would have more time to adjust mentally in order to get ready for the Niners. But...if you look at Warner's comments all the way up to game time on Friday, it's clear that he didn't know, and that no one did...otherwise he wouldn't have been making comments like, "it's better to know sooner than later."

But...by keeping the team in the dark as well, the team, that was told all week there was no change in the QB situation, that Leinart was still the starter and "no decision" has been made...now has to adjust to the reality of the decision. The question is...has Warner, Leinart and the team had enough time to absorb the reality of the decision and be ready to focus 100% on the Niner game?

The Niners named T.J. O'Sullivan their starter ten days ago.

We will see a week from today which team is more settled in and focussed.

Based on Friday's performance -

- Both QB's deserve to start.

- Only one gets to start.

- Someone, therefore, was going to be unhappy.

-The most obvious (and dumbest) solution to this dilemma would be to get rid of one of them, but (in the words and voice of Jon Gruden): "Are you out of your !@#$% mind?"

- Last season only one NFL starting QB played in all 16 games. Based on league and previous Cardinal experience, we can expect to see a lot of Matt Leinart before the season is over.

- We are lucky to have 2 QB's who play at a high level (assuming Friday's performances were no fluke).

- So either way you cut it - Leinart or Warner - we should consider ourselves lucky we've got 2 guys we can win with.

Can you say all of that in about 1/2 of what you just did. I might read it if you do.

I call BS on that one. I can think of more than that off the top of my head.

Eli Manning

I am sure there were more too.

Other than that, I agree with the post. I feel like we are a much better team with either one of our guys that the Colts are when led by Sorgi or the Pats when Cassel is playing.

Jeff the Shark is brilliant at it. In fact, he can reduce the gist of it to four quick lines or so. Jeff are you swimming around out there?

See that was not hard you made your point in under 500 words.

This hatred for long posts is IKratvil's calling card. If you see any new posters disparage people for being long winded, please point it out to me.

Not even close....Really.... There were still half of the people here that thought Leinart was our starter during the preseason. And he was giving mix signals on what he was going to do. Everyone had their own opinion what Whiz was thinking.

NOW that he has named Warner the starter....There are fans that STILL think Matt may start week 2?!? Just because of the way Whiz worded his announcement. That makes no sense...and that was my point of the post.

Campos, I think you'll agree I did not slam you or your post, and yet, I am one of those wondering if The Coach is thinking about starting Matt in Week 2. I am not saying it would make any sense for The Coach to do that, but it does make sense for fans to wonder. I listened to all of the press conferences, there was only one when Coach implied Matt would likely play because of our history of injuries. That makes me think Kurt is "The Starter", and not just for the first game. The rest of his statements left doubt.

I agree and I am glad you didn't slam me or my post. :) There are many other ways to get your point across without flaming someone personally. We all have opinions. IMHO I really think Whiz is trying to treat Leinart as careful as possible. Remember Mortensen said that sources have said Leinart was acting childish and pouty on the sideline. (Mort did have sources...he is much to respected and to high profile to report something so fast...Whiz had to damage control...because he had not talked to Matt yet.) Last year when Leinart was being subbed out for Warner he wallowed to a yahoo sports reporter. I like Matt..I really do but I like Warner more(Obvious)...But I think Whiz knows he must keep Leinarts head in the game. And I feel Whiz says what he does, so it gives Leinart hope. I mean with Warner starting the reg season....and yet only he played 50% of the snaps Leinart did in preseason...I think he wanted to build Matt's confidence up....and keep it up. Matt has issues of not being "The Man". And who wouldn't...There have been alot of talented Heismann trophy winners and great college QB's that have tanked when their confidence was shaken. Tim Couch, Ryan Leaf, Heath Shuler, Alex Smith, Akili SMith, Rex Grossman. Once the doubt sets in...it almost destroys them. Leinart is close to being that way.

ESPN has a poll up..."DO you think Matt Leinart will ever be a good QB" And over 60% say NO......That says quite alot....especially..And I mean especially....when California has it that way too.

Actually, that's just about as meaningful as a cup of warm spit. Who the hell cares what any poll on ESPN says about anything? It's entertainment only.

Campos, I think your last was a fair post. I wonder what the percentages would be for Cutler or Vince Young. For that matter, I bet 2 years ago 50% of fans would have said that Eli Manning would never succeed. It just goes to show, QBs are hard to pick, so much depends on opportunity and faith.

I do agree with AJ about ESPN. Being the worst fan in the NFL by their standards, makes me not care much for them.
