Here is my theory based on absolutely nothing but speculation.

BA was clearly having health issues his last season here. I think he retired mainly because of that. Maybe throw in some Amos Jones hate from MB and SK but mostly health and his wife not wanting him to die. I think it was a legit retire. Everyone moves on....well, I didn't but the team and BA did.

The Cards hire Wilks. If you believe the rumors MB had the final say as SK wanted someone else. Makes sense. Keim has built the team for a 3-4 and Wilks wants a 4-3 and the personnel just doesn't work. In the next several months Keim gets to say I told you so and MB gets to learn the hard way that he isn't the Svengalli of reading people. Also, BA gets his health problems under control.

Wilks gets fired. It was a mistake to hire him. Ok, ready to move on. Hey look, the Cardinals need a coach and BA wants to coach. He is the winningest coach in Cardinals long history. Seems like this should be a no brainer right? Except for some reason it isn't. Cards hire KK and BA goes to Tampa. What happened?

Ok, here is my theory. BA made the call to the team and was turned down. Who knows why. Maybe at his age and with his health past they wanted someone that could be here for 10 years and hire the young KK. Maybe they didn't like the thought of Amos Jones coming back. I dunno, but I do know that BA said in an interview after he was hired by Tampa that "experience matters in this league." And the way he said it made it stick in my head. Like he was telling the Cardinals that they screwed up hiring someone with zero NFL experience. I figured he would say more in the days after but then thought that it might have been part of the compensation we swap picks and he keeps his mouth shut.

Now, all that being said, I don't really believe in crap like that but I just couldn't stop wondering why BA isn't back with this team. Winningest coach in team history looking for a job and the team needs a coach....just seemed strange to me that it didn't end up working out.

Time to look forward not back. The fact that BA brought on Amos Jones just cements the fact that he was never going to evolve. Good luck to him

I’m not convinced BA is healthy. IMO, this is a 1-2 year stint for him at Tampa Bay before he’s forced to retire. I’m also not convinced that Winston is the savior for that team.

Don't want to get into some of these debates on why BA left but IMO you are 100% right. BA retired because of his health problems. He missed preseason games because of health problems and had cancer surgery done in the off season. It was downplayed but he has a history of health issues. I'll be surprised if he is still coaching in his 2nd season at Tampa Bay.
I like BA. I just feel he should have stayed retired.

Your theory seems to make the most sense to me. Mike and Steve wanted someone around longer than a couple years so they decided to go with youth.

Here's to hoping we kick Tampa's ass in 2019.

1. I think what you laid out is a plausible

2. I think that BA is the kind of guy who while very competent, successful, also wears out his welcome after 4 years. I think the Cards were ready to move on.

3. BA disclosed his health check from TB was a "C". Hmmm. Not "Great!", not "good", but....... "passing".

4. I dont blame MB for wanting a guy who if he works can be the HC for 10+ years. Thats not BA, and when he goes, how much of that offensive genius goes with him? Leftwich might be an up and comer, but he also might not be.

5. I also think BAs status impacts free agents. Who wants to sign a 5 year deal for a HC who is year to year? At the margins, a year to year HC hurts a team.

Yes, I think there's a back story concerning BA.

No, I don't think we know what that back story is.

The reason it matters is that it raises the possibility that the Cardinal FO screwed things up and might want to avoid repeating the same error in the future. (We're talking relationships between human beings here, and people are prone to repeat patterns of behavior).

BA did not cite his health in his final press conference. It was all about family. He said there were some other reasons but the main reason he was walking away was family. He told the story about his wife mentioning that their son was turning 40 and said it hit him hard. He said the time went by so fast and he was busy coaching through most of those years. He wanted to step away to spend quality time with family (wife and son).

Guess he spent enough time with them. Back to coaching. :)

Yep. He also said when he was here that Drew Stanton could take the Cards to the Super Bowl :biglaugh:

BA likes to BS.

BA isnt taking the Tampa Bay job without a QB that he admires under contract. He’s worked with Winston since he was 12 and has high praise for him. This isn’t BS, BA is genuine in his belief in him.

I love BA, but he also believed in Logan Thomas...I think Winston has all of the tools but is too immature...I think it is going to be a rough ride in TB.

an absent parent doesn't realize that you being home all the time isn't going to get your 40 year old son to come home a lot. he has his own life.
