Here is my theory based on absolutely nothing but speculation.
BA was clearly having health issues his last season here. I think he retired mainly because of that. Maybe throw in some Amos Jones hate from MB and SK but mostly health and his wife not wanting him to die. I think it was a legit retire. Everyone moves on....well, I didn't but the team and BA did.
The Cards hire Wilks. If you believe the rumors MB had the final say as SK wanted someone else. Makes sense. Keim has built the team for a 3-4 and Wilks wants a 4-3 and the personnel just doesn't work. In the next several months Keim gets to say I told you so and MB gets to learn the hard way that he isn't the Svengalli of reading people. Also, BA gets his health problems under control.
Wilks gets fired. It was a mistake to hire him. Ok, ready to move on. Hey look, the Cardinals need a coach and BA wants to coach. He is the winningest coach in Cardinals long history. Seems like this should be a no brainer right? Except for some reason it isn't. Cards hire KK and BA goes to Tampa. What happened?
Ok, here is my theory. BA made the call to the team and was turned down. Who knows why. Maybe at his age and with his health past they wanted someone that could be here for 10 years and hire the young KK. Maybe they didn't like the thought of Amos Jones coming back. I dunno, but I do know that BA said in an interview after he was hired by Tampa that "experience matters in this league." And the way he said it made it stick in my head. Like he was telling the Cardinals that they screwed up hiring someone with zero NFL experience. I figured he would say more in the days after but then thought that it might have been part of the compensation we swap picks and he keeps his mouth shut.
Now, all that being said, I don't really believe in crap like that but I just couldn't stop wondering why BA isn't back with this team. Winningest coach in team history looking for a job and the team needs a coach....just seemed strange to me that it didn't end up working out.
