My system started encountering problems the other day. It would randomly reboot.
Today it will go no further then the Microsoft loading window without going just black and trying to reboot.
I've recently gotten the windows has encountered a problem along with;
'attempt to reset display driver and timeout failed'.
Some other stuff too but it disappears to quickly to read.
When first booting it lists PCI devices. Normally that text is white, it's now purple.
I can boot to safe mode and I can boot to the bios.
Nothing is wrong according to the device manager when in safe mode.
I did a system repair from the installation, Vista, disc to no avail.
I tried the memory diagnogistic test but I can never see the results.
I also did a system restore to an earlier date successfully.
The only thing I haven't done is move RAM around.

I normally run the monitor with the DVI output but it makes no difference using the VGA.

Vista OS
Nvidia GeForce 8500GT

What do you think?

On board video works ok? Another video card to swap out? How long does it take before it reboots? It could be the CPU temperature causing it to reboot.

I have a 128MB PCI Express video card on my desk here you can use.

I can see everything in safe mode so on board video works.
Unfortunately I don't have another card to swap out and all my neighbors are Apple people.
It reboots in a couple of minutes when not in safe mode.
I was thinking about the CPU but all the fans appear to be working.
WHen I had a CPU go down a few years ago the computer would just shut down and not reboot plus you could hear the fans working really hard. I don't know if that's atypical or not.

I'm going to pull the card here shortly, shuffle some RAM and give everything a good blow and see what happens.

Turns out it was the video card. I replaced it and everything is back to normal.

The drivers were up to date and I tried re-installing them too including a different restore point.

Bottom line, new card, works fine, moving on.

Hmmm. Not good enough. Do us a favor...throw the old card back in and let us suggest things for you to try. Let us know when it is back in... :D
