Home of Diamondbacks, Bank One Ballpark name to remain unchanged

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - The BOB isn't changing its name.

Bank One Corp. announced Wednesday that it has agreed to be acquired by J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., but the Arizona Diamondbacks said the $60 billion US deal would not change the name of their Phoenix home, Bank One Ballpark. "Permission would have to be sought to change the name," Diamondbacks owner Jerry Colangelo said Wednesday, "and that's not in the cards."

Colangelo spoke with officials of Bank One and said the corporation has not intention of trying to change the name of the ball park, which opened in 1998.

Ballpark names have changed with greater frequency in recent years. Pacific Bell Park, the home of the San Francisco Giants, became SBC Park on Jan. 1.

Colangelo said that the acquisition would not allow J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. to change the naming-rights agreement for the Diamondbacks' ballpark.

"The commitment is a 30-year commitment," he said.

BOB, state's tallest building to get new names

[font=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]Bank One Ballpark and Arizona's tallest building will get new names next year following the pending merger of Bank One Corp. and J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.

The exact name, however, still hasn't been announced.

"It will be some variation of Chase," said Mary Jane Rogers, a Bank One spokeswoman in Phoenix.

As a result of the merger, expected to become final around July 1, the Bank One name will disappear from the stadium and from the company's 1,800 branches, including roughly 200 in Arizona, starting next year."We will work with the (Arizona) Diamondbacks' front office" in devising the actual new name, Rogers said.

Company officials still haven't announced possible personnel shifts affecting Arizona, where Bank One employs 6,700 people and is the state's largest bank. Chase counts 2,500 workers.

Shareholders of both firms already have approved the roughly $55 billion combination, as have various state-banking officials. The new company will be headquartered in New York.

The Federal Reserve System is scheduled to examine the deal next week.

The announcement will enhance the recognition of one of the most famous names in global banking.

"Some people in Arizona might think Bank One is more visible, but Chase has been around for about 125 years," said Rogers, noting Chase also has strong retail recognition in auto loans and mortgages.

Bank One Center in downtown Phoenix is the state's tallest building at 483 feet.

Jerry Colangelo may be important, but he's not quite Jamie Dimon.

Let's come up with some good suggestions on this board for the new stadium name.

The Hangar is where the Jethawks play - I'll accept the name, as long as we can get their lineup over here NOW. :D

It will be interesting to see how this proceeds, and whether JC tries to play hardball with them at all. I like BOB.

Somehow I doubt that Bank One would have agreed to a contract that didn't give them the right to change the name of the stadium if the name of the bank ever changed.

And why would the Diamondbacks want to play in a stadium that was named for something that doesn't even exist? How ridiculous would that make them look?

Hmmm...The Chaser?
The Chase Lounge?
The Ballpark Formally Known as BOB?
Copper Square Pavillion?
The Snake Pit?
Chase's Merger Mall?

Damn corporate buyouts!! As much as I hated it to begin with, I really started to like the name BOB for our stadium.

I like The Chase Lounge. That's a good one!

I never really liked that people called it the BOB. Seemed kind of silly. Plus, if you're Bank One, don't you want people to actually say the words Bank One when they mention the stadium?

I suppose the way it was handled was inappropriate, but let's get real - Bank One will no longer exist. Why wouldn't you change the name? Is Chase supposed to eat the huge cost of the marketing deal? Mergers happen, this probably won't be a major deal in the long run.
