No American president is more closely linked to basketball than Barack Obama. He is, after all, the world leader who hooped at the White House with balls that had his own dang face printed on the surface. But as the 2025 NCAA tournament approached, his annual bracket was curiously absent.

Turns out, he may have just been waiting out the First Four games before finalizing his selections. President Obama unveiled his picks Thursday morning, hours before the first round tips off. While there was plenty of chalk across his 33 winners, the former Commander-in-Chief did pick some upsets. They include:

  • North Carolina, a controversial choice to be the last team in the bracket, advancing to the Round of 32
  • Clemson making a run to the Elite Eight as a No. 5 seed
  • VCU toppling BYU to start the Rams' tournament
  • and... well, that's about it. Pretty chalky bracket!

If there's one takeaway it's that President Obama believes in the power of the SEC, to a point. He's got the Auburn Tigers, Tennessee Volunteers and Florida Gators all in his Final Four. Ultimately, however, his confetti falls on the ACC champion Duke Blue Devils in a final grouping that includes three No. 1 seeds and a No. 2.

That's a boring, safe bracket. But given how well SEC teams have played this winter and Cooper Flagg's looming return for the Blue Devils, it's a smart one.
