ARLINGTON, Texas - The Texas Rangers' search for a quality backup catcher may have ended Thursday when they agreed to terms with Rod Barajas on a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
A lifetime .212 hitter, Barajas appeared in a career-high 80 games with Arizona last season, batting .218 with three home runs and 28 RBIs. The 28-year-old did not commit an error and threw out 16 of 42 attempted base-stealers.
Barajas, who owns a .389 career average (7-for-18) with the bases loaded, hit .321 (17-for-53) with runners in scoring position last year.
A member of the Diamondbacks' 2001 world championship team, Barajas started Game Five of the World Series at Yankee Stadium and belted a solo homer.
Einar Diaz returns for his second season as the Rangers' starting catcher. Barajas is expected to battle Gerald Laird and Ken Huckaby for the backup job.
