MELISSA — Melissa scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning to slip past the Greenville Lions 2-0 in District 9-5A baseball on Wednesday.
The Lions dropped to 9-7 for the season with the loss in the district opener.
Greenville pitcher Easton Slagle limited the Cardinals to four hits and three walks in six innings with nine strikeouts.
Melissa pitcher Mason Owens held the Lions to just two hits in seven innings. Owens walked one and struck out nine.
Ethan Musil doubled and Ethan Brand singled for the Lions’ two hits.
Antonio D’Amore led Melissa with two hits. CamDeFury and Jaden Sandoval had the other hits for the Cardinals, who improved to 9-2-1 for the season.
The Greenville Lady Lions hung tough with Anna for three innings before giving way in a 15-5 District 9-5A softball loss.
Greenville scored five runs in the third inning to pull to within 6-5 but Anna outscored Greenville 9-0 the rest of the way.
