Barrett Marlow nearly willed Verdigris to a comeback victory, but the Cardinals’ late push fell just short.
Marlow sparked a fourth-inning rally with a two-run double Thursday in a 6-5 loss to Metro Christian at Berryhill in the opening round of the Haytown Classic.
The Patriots struck early with a three-run first inning, using back-to-back RBI hits from Drew Huff, Jacob Baker and Carson Messer to grab control. They added two more in the fourth — one on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and another on a single from Luke Huff — to take a 5-1 lead.
Verdigris clawed back in the bottom of the fourth when Marlow crushed a double to left, scoring Ian Lane and Korbin Ballinger to cut the deficit to two. Boston Acosta followed with an RBI single to make it 5-4.
Metro Christian tacked on a crucial insurance run in the fifth on Finn Kouplen’s RBI single, which proved to be the difference after Acosta came around to score again in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and error off the bat of Mac West.
Marlow led the Cardinals with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Acosta and Lane each collected a pair of hits, while Ethan Hushbeck reached base three times and pitched three innings with five strikeouts.
Landon Wine threw four innings in relief, allowing just three unearned runs.
Verdigris out-hit the Patriots 8-7 and drew eight walks but couldn’t capitalize on enough scoring chances late.
