First off, give credit to Mitch for the title. He came up with BASK, (BA Bruce Arians, SK Steve Keim). I only added the head of scouting, Matt Licht, because I consider him crucial to this new management group. I believe that Steve Keim believes this as well.
When began to first disect the old roster in order to create cap space for new additions, many people spoke out vehemently against them. I elected to hold off until I saw what they were trying to do. As I listened to them explain why they had to do this, and what they wanted to accomplish with it, I began to see that this just might be the answer to so many of our prayers.
They began assembling their coaching staff, again explaining why they made the selections they did, and how they hoped to use them to change our roster. The staff suddenly became very deep, both in numbers and in talent, again with the explanations of the necessity of teaching our current roster new and proper techniques.
When they began adding free agents, (and especially the kinds of FA's they brought in), both Mitch and I began to glow with the belief that we had struck Football Gold. Each player that they selected was done so very purposely. There was no waste involved, either in money, or in time spent in doing so. Contracts were frugal. Players were either brought on board immediately, or sent packing. There was no nonsense involved.
It was about that time that I wrote a thread which gave thanks to Michael Bidwill, and to BASK and Licht for the masterful job they had done with replenishing our losses in free agency. All their additions seemed to be self starters, who were hard workers, and students of the game. There were no me, me, me people in this group. I commented at the end of that piece, that I was VERY anxious to see if Steve Keim would be so agile in maneuvering during the draft, and if the scouts and coaches could come up with real talent.
As of today, one would surely have to reach VERY far to find fault with the draft that BASK and Licht conducted. I could not be happier with their performance. Today, at the end of this draft, they had turned 7 picks into 9 very talented and driven football players. They addressed the biggest needs remaining in our roster, and did so with skill, much perseverance, and even a modicum of heart searching as they played out this draft. The results are spectacular. My hat's off to this group of men, who have done everything they said they would do, and then some thus far.
Now, the only task at hand is to see if they can mold this group of players into a team. I am not a betting man, but if I were, I would be betting that they will have success here for a long, long time, and will leave us old fans of Cardinal's Football, 'BASKING IN THE LICHT' !!!!!
