Bauer pressing for spot in rotation

Josh Collmenter drew a dirty job early in spring training. He was issued a video camera and tickets to a medieval festival. He was tasked with hazing the rookie pitchers, filming their assorted acts of foolishness.

One of the victims was Trevor Bauer, the kid who might take his job.

"Trevor has this tool he uses to stretch, about a 6-foot plastic tube," Collmenter said. "At the festival, they have this little (carousel) horse on a cable. They let it go, and then you have to joust while riding the horse. We made him use his warm-up tube to joust with."

They make it sound like he might take Collmenter's job only to make drama, IMO. Bauer's far more likely to take Saunders's job.

He hasn't been doing well in spring training so far. If he doesn't get off to a good start, I could see Gibson putting Bauer in the rotation. They can't afford to get off to the start they did a few years ago.

Yeah, I've been watching him. It doesn't look good right now.

I think Saunders gets a spring pass no matter what he does. His job is to be a vet and eat innings in the back of the rotation. There's no reason to think he can't do that in 2012. Innings eaters only have affect when they get their starts. He's going to have bad games, but you stick with him and win half of his starts, you felt like you got productive, career year from that type of pitcher.

Collmenter looks like a long-relief guy guy -- two or three innings when a starter gets in early trouble. You feel comfortable with him throwing one time through the lineup, then you start sweating bullets and wearing out your bullpen in warmups. This is not a guy you make a blind, start-the-season commitment to in the rotation unless you don't have any other options.

Unless Bauer is awful, it seems like a foregone conclusion he takes Collmenter's spot and Collmenter goes to the bullpen.

I would expect Gibby to do this because Collmenter is his type of pitcher -- lots of heart and guts. If the kid puts the same kind of numbers, you won't hear a peep from me about his position in the rotation.

I don't think Bauer is really in the discussion about making the roster out of spring. He will be up by the break but I think being able to delay his clock is incentive enough for this team to keep him down for two months. I think the two guys who could take the 5th spot out of camp is Miley or Corbin. If I had to put money on it I would say Corbin. I am starting to wonder if Collmenter is going to open the season on the DL. They keep saying as long as he is healthy and he had to be scratched earlier in the spring. They mentioned he has been working on his secondary stuff so that's why the results haven't been there but I have been thinking there might be something else.
