FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – North Carolina State's Leah Shackley concluded her strong freshman campaign at the NCAA Division I women's swimming and diving championships March 23.
The Bedford native scored 37 points, the most of any freshman at the event. North Carolina State finished 10th as a team. Virginia won its fifth straight national title.
Shackley, who competed in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, was fourth in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 1:48.52, the second-fastest time in program history. She was sixth in the 100 backstroke with a personal-best time of 50.06, the second-fastest time in program history. Shackley, a six-time PIAA gold medalist that holds two state records, finished ninth in the 100 butterfly as well.
She was a member of the 200 freestyle and medley relay teams that each finished sixth. The 400 free relay team, which consisted of Shackley, took 11th.
Shackley finished second in the 200 back (1:48.73) at the ACC championships, finishing just off the program record of 1:48.43. She took third in the 100 back with a time of 50.22. She was fourth in the 100 butterfly, breaking the program record at 50.33 to surpass Kylee Alons' mark from 2021. Shackley helped the 400 free and medley relay teams finish third. She was a member of the 200 medley relay squad that took fifth.
