When it comes to free agents the Cincinnati Bengals lost this offseason, Trent Brown hasn’t come to mind often.
Brown, after all, signed with the Bengals roughly one year ago and technically won the starting right tackle job to start the season before suffering a season-ending injury in Week 3.
Ryan Phillips of Sports Illustrated, though, selected Brown as Cincinnati’s most notable loss in free agency this offseason:
“The Bengals can ill-afford to lose anyone on the offensive line, but they cast Brown adrift after a disappointing season in 2024. The veteran tackle suffered a torn patellar tendon in Week 3 and missed the rest of the season. The Houston Texans signed him to a one-year deal hoping for a bounce-back season. Meanwhile, the Bengals will have to add offensive line help via the draft.”

Historically, it’s fair enough to say the Bengals can’t afford to lose any bit of talent in the offensive trenches. And they do enter this offseason with upgrades necessary at both guard spots.
That said, Brown was very much in danger of losing the right tackle job over the summer to rookie Amarius Mims before an unfortunately timed injury. The rookie didn’t let go of the job and showed major signs of upside when fully healthy throughout the season.
For now, the Bengals have versatile names like Cody Ford who can kick to the tackle spot if necessary. Drafting a rookie at some point as another swing backup would make sense, too.
Overall, though, this speaks to the fact the Bengals really worked hard to retain their most important free agents this offseason. Arguably the biggest loss was Akeem Davis-Gaither at linebacker, but they attempted to offset that by signing Oren Burks.
