What's your top 5?

Here's mine, 5 to 1.

5. The Rookie

-- Yes, Disney had their finger prints all over this one, but it really painted the picture of Jim Morris's rise from high school coach to Major Leaguer to perfection.

It had the cheese factor, make no mistake about it. However, it also left us all clamoring to root for this Rocky story character.

4. Cobb

-- This movie sugarcoated nothing and had salty and offensive language that would make even the foulest of foul mouths to blush. However, while I don't condone the language used, it was almost neccessary for them to portray Cobb exactly how he was, which was a vile son of a bitch.

Tommy Lee Jones played Cobb to perfection. The movie HIT Cobb to perfection. I almost felt like I knew the guy watching this.

3. Major League

-- Funny as hell, not really on par with the realism, but still a good baseball movie nonetheless.

2. Bull Durham

-- Ever want to see the life of the Minor Leagues in full? Bull Durham captured all of that and then some. It had a little bit of everything that the males looked for in a baseball movie, and had the romantic side for the ladies.

1. Field Of Dreams

-- How can you NOT appreciate this movie? It's a real nod to the past of baseball, when the sport was about much more than the multi-billion dollar industry it is today, and a time when the big debate was "Ruth or Cobb", "Mays or Mantle" and "Gibson or Koufax" instead of "Roid User or Not Roid User". It almost makes you go back to the days of youth when baseball was about so much more.

I'm sorry but its a shame you even mentioned the likes of Field of Dreams and Bull Durham with the Rookie. The Natural and Eight Men Out deserve to be on that list. Even a League of Their Own should be on there before the Rookie.

Mine would be:
5. Major League
4. Eight Men Out
3. The Natural
2. 61
1. Bull Durham

Eh.. I liked The Rookie. I enjoyed watching the Disney stories.. I'm able to show my little girl them.

Besides, could have been worse.. I COULD have said Angels in The Outfield or Rookie Of The Year LOL.

What about "The Babe"?

I was going to do the scene where he has that gal pull his finger at the party at graduation, but my wife wouldn't let me.

I share your opinion about Field of Dreams. I don't know if it's the best, but it's my favorite.

As a teenager in the '50's, we were the first generation of kids who wore different clothes, listened to different music and talked differently than our parents. It was the end of "children should be seen but not heard". I was happy to be part of it.

The only times my Dad and I really connected were either going to a ballgame or throwing a ball back and forth on the side of the house.

The first (of many) times that I saw Field of Dreams, and the scene where Ray said, "John -- Dad -- do you want to have a catch?", tears streamed down my face, remembering the times with my Dad when I was a kid.

Pretty good cast, too. James Earl Jones and Burt Lancaster, in addition to Kevin Kostner.

I thought "For Love of The Game" was a pretty good baseball movie. I'd probably rank it around #5 or so.

BC, excellent post.

I can tell you that you were certainly not alone when it comes to your thoughts. I can never watch that movie without tearing up. I can't really say that my father and I have a bad relationship persay, but we're not as close as I wish we could be and haven't been since he left my mom. However, that end scene takes us all back to a time where we looked at our dad as our big hero.

Don't have a top 5, though I'm saddened to only see the Sandlot mentioned once here. That movie is freakin' fantastic.

See Greg, I'm not the only one who thinks Angels in the Outfield rocks.

Anyone ever see the original?
