My daughter is about to turn 8 and she wants a DS for her birthday. I've never even played with a DS before, I mean I had a gameboy in 1992 but...

So anyway I was looking online and I see the following models:

DS
DS lite
DSi
DSi XL
3DS

Which one is the best one? I keep reading about how the 3ds is a bomb and nobody is liking it so I dont think I'll get her that one unless what I'm reading on the web about it is wrong.

Thanks in advance!

My personal favorite is the Nintendo DS Lite. In fact, it is probably the greatest gaming system of all time.

If you were going to buy new though, the price of the 3DS at $169.99 is a steal compared to the $249.99 that it was. Not sure I would recommend the 3DS to an 8 year old. I think Nintendo has warnings for children under 6 to not use them.

Nintendo DS Lite is my recommendation. Great battery life, Gameboy Advance compatible, great screen, etc.

(have owned 2 DS, (phats) at least a half dozen DS Lites, a DSi, and now a 3DS)

I second this.

I kept borrowing (taking) my daughter's DS Lite so much that a couple of years ago, she got me my own for Father's Day. It's a great system and sure cures boredom sitting on a plane or waiting at the doctors office, etc.

DS Lite or 3DS. The 3DS's 3D functionality can be turned off on the slider to save battery and headache. One of the benefits of the 3DS is it has more internal memory so you can run some of the newer games the DS Lite will never be able to run. I don't know how many there are, but I do know the Zelda 64 port is one of those games.

Since your daughter is only 8, it's possible she won't care about having the latest and greatest, but it probably has a lot to do with what her friends will own as well.

There's a novelty factor of the DSi and the 3DS that make it look extremely desirable, especially to kids, but you likely won't get a whole lot of use out of the 3D or the camera. Take the previous statement with a grain of salt because I have not owned a DSi or 3DS because there's so much on my DS Lite that I haven't had the need to upgrade.

Buying brand new you're looking at $100 or $170.

Also, if you're into (old) video games yourself and don't mind breaking the law, there's a card you can purchase that will allow you to play emulators on your DS provided you have the roms. I have a card in my DS that lets me play Atari, NES, and SNES games. It also allows you to play DS games if you want to get technical about it, but I use it for emulators

Why the hell have you had so many DS? I have one but my dog ate the power cord so its useless. Only ever bought one DS game for it, Final Fantasy IV remake...

I tend to buy the new ones that come out and pass them down to others in the family. The children have had them as well. Family of 7 with most if not all of us playing the DS makes it easy to purchase so many.

You can buy power cords for a dollar or two online for your DS that is missing one.
