Makes sense. We will see how it's structured. RT @Mwanamatapa: @Cardschatter help could be in form of Bettcher's, Caldwell's replacements?

Hearing OLB coach James Bettcher will be named the new #AzCardinals defensive coordinator. Bettcher came to Arizona with Arians from Indy.

Prior to joining the Colts, Bettcher spent nine years in the college coaching ranks. In 2011, he served as linebackers coach/special teams coordinator at New Hampshire, and he coached the NCAA FCS leading tackler and 2011 Buck Buchanan Award Winner (FCS National Defensive Player of the Year), Matt Evans. He also helped the Wildcats rank in the top 20 nationally in both punt return and punt coverage

That he is an OLB coach and has been for a long time, I would imagine he will want better OLB and blitz play which we really do need. I still am scared about hiring such a greenhorn to be calling plays. yes he has one at OC but BA calls the plays, not the OC. Scheming and playcalling are a huge part of why DC matters.

BigRedRage, I understand your experience concern. But I will remind you about the number of posters who expressed concern about Bowles. Most of those in the business seem to think that he is an up and coming coaching talent, but no one knows how good a DC he will be. And no matter how good a coach he is, he'll need talent to get the job done. At least he's familiar with the roster.

Hearing Mike Nolan isn't on the Cardinals radar, they're expected to hire a couple of coaches on defense as position coaches.

Let's not get crazy here. He's been an OLB coach for three years in the NFL--kinda.

Eight years ago he was a graduate assistant at UNC. 10 years ago he was an assistant coach at his high school.

Arians has earned the benefit of the doubt on his coaching hires. If this happens, I'm chalking it up to the first "I'm Bruce Freaking Arians" Move that looks inexplicable based on the information that we have available.

Apologies to Mitch, BTW. I thought that a Bettcher candidacy was another of his fever-dreams, but it turned out to be on the scent for this one.

there were not much choices with caldwell departure
rapone has been a defensive cordinator just in deleware
when we knew would have been a internal choice.the only logical name was bettcher since he has been also assistant head coach in indianapolis, pratt is almost 90 years old.and buckner was a former nfl player who just started to coach

He was "Special assistant to the head coach" in Indianapolis. IMO, a glorified coaching intern.

I agree.

However, Bowles had experience.

This guy has been coaching in the nfl for under 5 years and only at a position coach level. This is what started the demise of Whizenhunt IMO and im hoping we have the opposite affect this time.

As I said, I just don't think we have enough information to make a judgement. This is either another inspired decision by Bruce Arians, or the first moment we start thinking that this is like when Ken Whisenhunt decided the key replacement for Todd Haley was Mike Miller (who had more experience than James Bettcher, but whatever).

Hopefully Bettcher is more like Mike Tomlin, who was DBs coach for the Bucs for four years before one year as DC of the Vikes and then off to win two Super Bowls for the Steelers.

Bettcher might be a puppet DC because BAs bringing in someone after the SB to mentor him and pull the strings.

I'll admit to being a little underwhelmed, but at this point, I can't really question what/who Arians wants on his staff.

Ben McAdoo. And the Giants' fans are pretty pleased with him. Many on the website think he'll be the HC when Coughlin retires.

When Todd Bowles was brought on, a lot of people moaned and groaned about the hiring. Granted, this situation has its differences but lets wait and see.. so far this front office has produced quite a product and I tend to side on benefit of the doubt as of late.
