Sporting News is reporting that a newly created research group (not enforcement) is evaluating the proliferation of package deals in college sport and Daniel Hackett and USC is one they're very interested in. The initial investigation says it clearly fits their definition of a package deal, but is not necessarily a violation without further investigation.

Hackett's case was of extreme concern because they not only may have hired the dad to get the son, but because USC is private and subject to different rules, they were allowed to provide Hackett with free tuition as the son of a USC employee, so he doesn't count against the teams scholarship limit. So they're not only looking at the package deal angle, but whether USC is violating the spirit of the scholarship limits.

ESPN's Outside the Lines will apparently due a full length story on this Sunday morning.

About time. Hear that ASU/KU??

Come on Jon. College hoops is so rotten with rules violations none of this matters anymore. The schools and coaches that cheat will continue stretching the envelope. The ones that don't won't.

I put those two in just because of recent package deals.
