He has never put up good numbers against oakland. I really hope he plays well. Struggles again against a good D and we might see Warner start week 1.

10/4, good buddy. Leinart's only appearance against Oakland was the third start of his career after two heart-breaking losses so it's not really a case of Leinart "never" playing well against Oakland. Warner "never" plays well vs. Tampa Bay. Leinart hasn't played Oakland enough to predict anything.

agreed. The only way Leinart isn't starting is if he gets injured.

I don't know, I wouldn't be surprised to see Warner get one more good look in the final preseason game if Leinart goes out and has a poor showing against the Raiders.

Big? How about HUGE ?

Leinart has all of the first quarter and 1/2 of the second quarter against, what might be, the best secondary in football.

This is his final exam. Whether he dinks and dunks his way to a couple of scores, or airs it out will not matter.

1. How does he lead the team.
2. His decision making.
3. How runs the offense.
4. NO TURNOVERS!!!!!!!!

Don't forget this is a big game for Warner too!

He has to go out there and have no turnovers, or fumbles. Plus look so much better than Matt, so he can start making that question about who is our top QB sound LOUDER than Boldin's contract complaints.......thats pretty loud.

Big game for Raiders D too so far they faced 2 of the worst QB situations in the NFL in SF and then Vince Young.

They've allowed over 400 yards passing in 2 games and have been very stingy against the run, well not exactly almost 5 yards per carry and particularly bad in the 2nd game.

On paper they have a good secondary with Asomugha, Hall and Huff and they have Burgess to rush the QB.

Should be interesting. It's blacked out locally but I'm going to Sacramento this weekend and I'm pretty sure the blackout doesn't extend that far so I should be able to watch the game.

Well stated, Rugby.

I've stayed out of every Leinart/Warner thread so far, watching the camp stuff, the games and Whisenhunt's comments before forming an opinion.

Quite simply, from Whisenhunt's perspective, he absolutely must decide quickly two separate things. Does Leinart have upside worth developing? Which QB will give us a better chance to win this year?

By saying this week that 2008 was not a make or break year for Leinart, Whisenhunt confirmed in my mind that he believes Leinart does have upside.

(Read Somers' take on Whisenhunt's ticking off Leinart on purpose: http://www.azcentral.com/members/Blog/KentSomers/)

Taking everything all together, this Raiders game is huge for Leinart in the short term. And huge for Warner in the longer term.

Why? For me --

1. Warner is playing better than Leinart right now and during all of camp as well.
2. Leinart is already right on the edge of losing the 2008 starting job. He can very easily lose it tomorrow night, if he has not already.
3. If Warner starts this year, plays well until the break in week seven, while staying healthy, we will extend his contract during the off week.

My guess today, with a probability of about 0.85, is that Kurt Warner is our 2008 starting QB.

moklerman, please give me the same courtesy I give your posts and never quote mine or answer them. I don't consider you a Cardinals fan and your jock-sniffing love of Kurt Warner ruins too many threads.

I'm not sure that's the best way to ask for a favor...

he did say please.
Very true. As stomach-turning as a QB "controversy" can be, I must say that this preseason has held my interest much more than most others. I will also be watching the Raiders game with an actual interest rather than "don't get hurt" thoughts.

I didn't hear the "isn't a make or break year" comments about Leinart from Whis but since they were originally posted I interpreted it as there was no rush to get him on the field. I think that was the context in which Urban blogged about the comment. Warner might have a better shot at starting than anyone previously thought type of thing.

In any case, the Raiders seems like an odd matchup and they've been so bad in recent years it's hard to gauge what they might bring on defense. I think it will be tough to get the ball to the WR's with the DB's that they have which will play to Leinart's strengths so he might have a pretty good showing. Like I mentioned earlier, if he gets pulled after two series the way Warner did in KC, the starting job will be Leinart's because the coaching staff knows what it wants to know already. If they keep him in a little longer then it means they need to see more from him and Warner might have a shot.

Apologies to moklerman. My outburst wasn't justifiable. It won't happen again.

Bring on the season!

Good post, it seems to some that it is a forgone conclusion that Leinart starts, but I think the QB race is much closer than they think. If Leinart has a bad outing tomorrow I wouldn't be surprised to see Warner under center week one.

FYI in the SJ Mercury News they asked Kiffin about coaching against Leinart since they were together at USC. he said "we're going to go old school Buddy Ryan on him and really get after him", but apparently Kiffin was joking about it and said he hadn't really given much thought to coaching against Matt.

Also possible we'll see McFadden return a punt against us they are trying to replace Chris Carr doing that and last week Johnnie Lee Higgins fumbled one that was recovered in the endzone for a TD so now they're trying out a bunch of other players.

This may be a good test for both QBs since Oakland plays a lot of man pass defense.

The good news is it is scheduled to air at 2 am CT Sunday on NFL Network, only a few hours after the actual game.

In the bay area it's tape delayed for 10pm and then on again Sunday night at 7. So if I can't watch in Sac tomorrow night, I'll watch it sunday evening.
