Big Sky Conference action started last night with all four home teams (NAU, Montana, Montana State and Sac St) winning.

Defending champ Montana is the team to beat, going 10-2 in non-conference action, losing only to Boise St and Wisc-Milwaukee, and beating Utah Valley (who beat ASU), Loyola Marymount (twice), Santa Clara and Drake.

It seems like forever since Boise was in the big sky, but it wasn't too long ago. Some of their big sky teams, could beat their current team:)

Yup - NAU professional student for many years - graduated in 1996 (finally!)

I've been pleasantly suprised by them . 8 games left in the conference schedule - only 3 at home. Montana will be tough to beat on the road.

Now, I'm actually pulling for them. I'll be checking them out come conference tournament time. Of course that's the only time I'd ever see a Big Sky game.

Good deal - I was at the conference championship game in 1998 where we won our first Big Sky Tournament Championship - awesome game!

I was actually a spring pledge in '84. I got you beat though. I started in '81. Got the degree in '98. I wasn't going to school those years at Fiddlestix and Mulligan's (and a couple of other years).

That's right - I knew it was the same school year as me pledging Kappa Sigma. I have you beat on the length between starting at NAU and finishing. I did start college in 1981, but at Univ of Illinois.

Men’s Basketball Garnering Attention
(01/25/2006) FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona University men’s basketball team is starting to garner attention from national media sources that cover college basketball.
The Lumberjacks received 63 votes in The CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll, ranking fourth among the other schools receiving votes and 29th overall. NAU defeated 10th-ranked Montana last week. The Grizzlies dropped to No. 11 this week. Saturday’s opponent, Sacramento State, received 12 votes this week, ranking 48th overall despite two home losses last week.

The Lumberjacks were also listed on ESPN’s Bracketology, a mock NCAA Tournament bracket. According to the recent update, NAU would be a No. 15 seed and play No. 2 seed Illinois in the Dayton regional.

The NAU men’s team is off to its best start in Big Sky Conference play since the 1998-99 season at 6-0, looking to run the record to 7-0 in league play against Sacramento State. The Lumberjacks last opened 7-0 during the 1998-99 season en route to a 12-4 record.

NAU plays host to Sacramento State on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., following the women’s games against the Hornets at 2 p.m. Last weekend, the Lumberjacks attracted a season-high 4,103 fans against Montana State and 3,417 fans Thursday versus Montana. NAU completes the first half of the Big Sky season 7-0, and in first place. The second half will be much tougher, with 5 of 7 games on the road, including games at teams 2-4 in the standings, Montana, Montana State and Sacramento State.

Still a few hurdles - like road trips to the Montanas, and the conference tourney. But, whoever wins the regular season, hosts the conference tournament.
