Despite having quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders and Jaxson Dart on the board in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers went with a Steelers-type of guy with defensive tackle Derrick Harmon out of Oregon. Here are our big takeaways from the move.

Quarterback not a priority

The Steelers now won't go back on the clock until the middle of the third round unless they make a trade. This tells us they are more about adding a depth quarterback late in the draft rather than a guy who could develop into a starter.

Harmon's health will be something to watch

Harmon has some mystery shoulder concern, which is part of why he slid to No. 21. His participation in summer activities and training camp will be worth watching to see if he is on schedule to contribute as a rookie.

Still need a run stuffer

We hope the Steelers still look at the defensive tackles on the third day for one of these short, squatty nose tackle prospects to be an early down run stopper.

Cam Heyward 2.0

The similarities between Harmon and Cameron Heyward are too obvious to ignore. If he can develop into that type of player, no one will miss the quarterback the team didn't take.
