Big trade with patriots - Cooper for Chandler Jones

I like the trade. I supported Cooper for a long time, but he wasn't getting in the game, and that option is not one I'd want us to pick up. Granted, we gave up a 2nd, which stinks, but you know what? You have to give up something to get something, and WE GOT THE PASS RUSHER WE NEED!!! Excellent! This is exactly what Keim had to do. For all the naysayers claiming he was powerless, that there was nothing he could possibly do, well, here it is--proof that there are ways to get it done. I'm just glad he works for us

Now, granted, this leaves 3/5 of our offensive line in absolute limbo, so...we need help there still. Lots of it.

I will say this about Cooper, before he got hurt his rookie year, he looked like a stud. Since then he seems to have struggled to find his place.

If the Pats can get him back up to his potential he will be a good pick up for your team, he is very athletic.

Cooper needed a change of scenery. I think he can still become a solid talent once he gets to a new environment.

I hope so. He looked so good in camp before he got hurt and so bad last year.

Pats fan here. I really like this deal for both teams. Jones was gone after this year and we have options behind in in the short term in Sheard and Ninkovich along with young guys the Pats drafted last year. It is hard to find a good DE but the Pats should be able to absorb the loss without losing too much this year. Cooper seems like an interesting player and though it seems he is likely just a 1 year rental it is a good signing with our all interior being so young. He is going to be the "old man" of the group at 26!. The 2nd round pick was the selling point of course and I will be interested to see what they do with that. Maybe go DE instantly to try to get the next guy or help out the team elsewhere? Overall I am happy with the trade.

Now the part you want to hear about.

First off Chandler Jones is a good football player and DE. However he is good and not great. He is not going to make the HOF but he has a very solid career in front of him. I like his ability to pass rush. He is a streaky player though and has a few very good games a year and a few games where he is invisible. Generally though he does get around the QB and causes pressure almost every game at the least. He is a better pass rusher than run defender but you would be hard pressed to find a pass rusher like him who plays the run as well. Most pass rushers are 10-15 lbs lighter so it is nice to not lose to much in run support considering he is a pass rusher first.

His incident with the weed is not a big deal in my mind. He keeps his nose clean generally and never came off as a head case to me. He loves the game and plays hard every game and is the kind of guy you want in your locker room though not really a defensive leader type. His biggest selling point is the amount of snaps he can play. He is better at 40 or so like most DEs but he can and often did go wire to wire for the Pats before this past year and was fairly good all game.

Considering your teams lack of rushers you are going to like him a lot but don't be shocked if he seems to be "meh" for a couple of short streaks this year. Also he does get injured a bit here and there but no major injuries yet so overall he tends to be out there for you but not a true iron man type player.

MAAAAAASSSSSSSIVE trade. Pass rusher in his prime changes this whole D, especially if we can bring Freeney back to play the same role as last year.

Also, frees us in the draft to go BPA with our first round pick. I'd still like to see us go D there and just load up on that side of the ball considering we're pretty loaded on O. Humphries either takes the RT position or Watford beats him and we already saw our O function at a high level with Wat.

As for G/C, still not sure what they do there, but I'm confident those holes will be filled by someone at least adequate.

Really, really happy with this move.

It's the right move for both teams. You can tell it's a sign of two savvy organizations now.

New England needed a high pick (Goodell robbed them) and knew that they couldn't keep him and Hightower.

Cardinals wiffed on free agent after free agent on pass rushers so they gave up a good pick and a player with potential to address their biggest need.

Hopefully Jones resigns with us and Cooper gets close to his potential so it's a win for both.

I really hope not. There isn't a QB prospect in this draft that impresses me. This draft reminds me of the year when teams went all in for players like Ponder, Locker, Gabbert, etc. That said, I'm excited as hell for this trade. Definitely the best trade in the history of this franchise.

Way to turn a couple of weaknesses into a strength. Cooper was obviously a blown pick and this staff's track record picking in the 2nd rd has been less than stellar.

So they turned that situation on it's head by parlaying those weaknesses into a very good player at a position of great need. Awesome trade!

Been reading the pats forum. About 80% are happy with the trade as they all complained he disappeared after week 8. Only two sacks in 9 games both against a blowout vs titans.

Thanks to SteveKiner and bobdigital for coming on and sharing their valuable knowledge about the Pat's end of this trade. From all aspects, this appears to be a very solid trade by both franchises, and once again shows that Keim continues to artfully maneuver in the world of GM's. He has proven his worth at structuring short term prove it contracts in free agency, and has a solid record thus far in dealing with the draft to grow youth into solid talent long term. This is a great coming-out entry into the art of the trade for him, and it could hardly have been a bigger 'get'. He continues to bring in solid talent to continue the on-going job of building a better offensive line at the same time. He and Michael Bidwill have this franchise poised to remain in the forefront of those teams who are regularly knocking on the door to the Super Bowl. I believe that this trade is his announcement that he is as adept as anyone in the league in creating and managing an 'elite' roster in the NFL today.
