On Friday, Tim Duncan turned 49 years old. The five-time NBA champion is by far the greatest player to ever suit up for the San Antonio Spurs.
Over his 19-season career, he averaged 19 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks. He made 15 All-Star Games and a record 15 All-Defensive Teams, and won MVP in 2002 and 2003.
Since retiring in 2016, he had largely withdrawn from public life, which was expected. The Big Fundamental was never one to embrace the press and the attention that comes with being a superstar.
Duncan spent the 2019-20 season as an assistant coach on Gregg Popovich's staff, and was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 2020.
Despite not being one for social media, fans and the NBA shared birthday messages for Duncan.
"Seeing Timmy D almost 50 doesn't seem right," posted a fan.
"He's Top 5 ALL TIME," added another.
Of course, as with any birthday, some lighthearted jokes at the expense of Duncan were to be expected, as well.
Duncan might not see the birthday wishes, but he likely wouldn't have it any other way.
"You see MJ, you see Magic, you show these all-time greats, like that, they've retired, but people still like to know them and follow them up and all that," reflected Giannis Antetokounmpo in 2022. "You know, I don't know if I can do that. I want to be like Tim Duncan. What the hell is Tim Duncan?"
He's been spotted at the Victory Capital Performance Center frequently, often with David Robinson, Manu Ginobili, or Victor Wembanyama. His quiet retirement is well earned, and he is likely celebrating quietly with his family.
