Not a counter and don't play much anymore... However, what always worked for me was to remain militantly consistent to the following strategies:
- ALWAYS hit on 16 or less when the dealer has a 7 or more showing.
- Always split 8's and Aces, regardless of what the dealer is showing.
- Always split any pair (obviously NOT 10's or Facecards!) whenever the dealer is showing a 4, 5 or 6.
- Always Double-Down whenever you have the chance and no matter what the dealer is showing.
- On "Soft" hands (an Ace and something less than an 8), always Double Down whenever the dealer is showing a 4, 5 or 6.
- Always hit when you have 12 and the dealer is showing a 2, or a 7 thru 10, Facecard or Ace.
- Don't hit when you have a 12 and the dealer is showing a 3, 4, 5 or 6.
- In terms of the amount to bet... Whatever you start with in terms of your initial bet (say $25), double it when you win. And then double it again should you win again. Ideally, you want to win 3-4 hands in a row and place those winnings up to bet (so 4 wins in a row and you now have $200 up as your bet). Depending upon your degree of risk-comfort or how you feel at that moment, you can then take your winnings and move back down to your initial $25 bet, or go halfway down, or, add some more to your bet...
The key - as always, is knowing when to walk away... I can pretty much guarantee that if you follow the above, you will be up at some point... The trick is to get away from the table at the right moment.
I have had a lot more wins than losses in Blackjack. I am not at all a card counter. Just been followed the above and for the most part (I've failed a few times at this....), knew when to walk away when the momentum turned... All in all, over a 10 year stretch, I am up substantially... Mainly on the back of 4 really big wins.
