OK, this is the biggest shock of free agency so far.

How was Doc Rivers able to sell Blount on the Celtics with Danny Ainge still in charge? Does the extra $3m on a $40m contract really make that much of a difference for Blount?

He could have taken the full MLE from Miami and played major minutes for an up-and-coming contender. Speaking of which, the Heat have struck out on Blount and Rafer Alston, who were their two targets...I wonder who's next on their list?

If this is true, Doc Rivers is already a leading candidate for coach of the year.

Shaq! LOL

According to reports, the answer is "yes".

A deal that sent Brian Grant ($13.3), Eddie Jones ($13.3), and perhaps Butler ($1.9) would be enough to cover. It would mean Shaq, Odom, Wade and "who's he?" :D

It works salary-wise but the Lakers can't be that stupid. I'm sure that they will demand either Odom or Wade. Possibly both and that's why the deal can't go through.

Today's reports are include Grant and Odom. That's not enough cap wise. Grant is $13.3 and Odom is $9.1 - $22.4. The target would be $25 million which is 85% of Shaq's $29 million.

Finding the extra $2.6 million is not as simple as it looks. Wade's salary fits, but there is no way they give him up. Butler only makes $1.9 million. I suppose the Lakers could set it up where the LA pays part of Shaq's salary, but I'm not sure how those things work.

In any case, Grant and Ddom are about as good as the Lakers are likely to get if the Mavs won't move Dirk.

I believe the Grant/Odom/Butler idea also includes Malik Allen. Allen makes $720K, which is just enough to put the Heat's offer over the minimum.

I would think that the league and the union would find some way to make some exception, the contract that Shaq was allowed to sign is just unmanageable in any deal.

Aren't the Heat under the cap? Hoopshype has them at only $41.4 million. Their draft pick takes some space, but even so, they should have more wiggle room in a potential O'Neal trade. Grant and Odom might end up being enough, speaking strictly in terms of salary, depending on where the cap line ends up being.

realgm.com has a pretty cool trade checker that evaluates all of the salaries and stuff, so check out the site! I don't think Shaq will go the Heat. Not enough talent to match shaq's talent.

Assuming the cap is at 45 million, the Heat could send Grant/Odom out, and take back 26 million in salary. Add Butler and they can take back 27.9 million.

Still not enough (that is with them not going over the cap, so they dont have to match salaries.)

Anyways, the cap space won't provide much in terms of wiggle room. Any deal will most likely push them over the cap, so they would have to match salaries.

If a deal goes down, I would assume it will be the one FDog mentioned.
