Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. entered Friday's game against the New York Yankees in unusual form. While the right-handed slugger came in with a .277 batting average, not far off from his career .287 mark, his power numbers were way down.
Sporting a career-worst .372 slugging percentage entering Friday, Guerrero came into the game with just one home run on the season. That changed in the top of the sixth inning when Guerrero hit a 108 MPH laser over the left-center field wall to break a scoreless tie.
"Blink and you'll miss it," the Blue Jays exclaimed.
Perhaps all Guerrero needed to find his power stroke was a trip to the Bronx. In his career, the four-time All-Star has dominated Yankee Stadium. This was highlighted by an announcement the Blue Jays made after his solo shot.
"Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s 15 Home Runs at Yankee Stadium are his most at ANY opposing stadium," the team announced.
In fact, Guerrero's 15 career home runs at Yankee Stadium are the third-most by any player in their first 43 career games in the Bronx (via MLB's Sarah Langs). The 12-13 Blue Jays would love nothing more than for their new $500 million investment to find his power stroke in this critical AL East series.
Toronto entered Friday three games back of the Yankees for first place in the division, and hopes to leave New York having made up some ground. Guerrero's sixth-inning blast is a good step towards doing just that.
