I was really surprised to see the same lineup for 2 straight days. I'm sure that will change tonight.

Could someone tell me why Orepesa was brought in last night. He has really struggled this past month or so and had pitched badley on Monday? Why wasn't Randolph or Villiareal(sp) brought in at the start of the 8th inning?

If we don't make the playoffs I will put the blame on Brenly. The poor base running, poor linups and the constant juggling of the lineup fall directly in his lap. I also think the Murphy should be gone and we bring the guy from Tucson up as batting coach. It amazes me how well these guys hit when called up.

On the bright side, that was only our second loss when leading after 7 innings this season (49-2); on the minus side, I wrote in the season thread about how BB's hunches are starting to adversely affect the club, especially hoping that certain players work themselves out of slumps - Oropesa was the first to come to mind when I saw BB motion for him last night.

It was nice to see the same lineup two games in a row, but we all know that is bound to change tonight. As far as Murphy goes....yes, he should go. It IS the responsibility of the hitting coach to teach patience at the plate and how to work a pitch count, something this club doesn't have a clue about; however, it is also the job of the manager to sit down anyone not willing to listen to the coaches. Whoever is teaching the youngsters down in AAA seems to be doing a good job, and should be rewarded as such.

When does it becomes the responsibility of the guy who signed:

The career .325 OBP C
The career .252 OBP C
The career .307 OBP RFer

and traded for:

The career .316 OBP 1Bman
The career .337 OBP RFer

and waited until the very last possible moment to get rid of:

The career .316 OBP SS
The career .317 OBP 3Bman

the one who demoted down to AAA:

The .365 OBP rookie 1Bman (4th on the team)

When an organization shows such indifference to OBP then why would we expect the coaches to work on that? Why would we expect the players to care about it?

All good points, DWKB - I guess I'm placing too much faith in the coaching staff to straighten things out on the field, knowing that there is little chance JC would fire Joe Jr. for what you previously mentioned; the fall guys for Jerry are usually found in the dugout and not in the front office....at least that is how he does it with the Suns. (Son Brian excluded)

I would hope the players still care about their performance, but who is there to prod them along right now??

LOL- May I borrow your disclaimer?

It is apparently no longer the philosophy of the team as a whole to be patient - we used to have a good number of walks as a team, unless I misremember, and we were pretty decent about wearing down starting pitchers. In those things, it seems to me this year is different.

We've had the same hitting coach and same GM for several years, though we are gradually running out of Buck-influenced personnel and practices (yeah, yeah, flog me, please....I cannot believe things like that are coming out of MY mouth! {disclaimer, etc} I was just reading how Earl Weaver used to drill EVERYONE, including pitchers, really hard on defensive plays and "fundamentals" all season long so they'd be automatic responses, and recall that Buck used to do much the same.)

But I have to wonder if BB doesn't bear some of the discredit for pushing the "aggressive" baseball nonsense (whatever that means, and which has not paid off, as DWKB and others said it wouldn't). Over the last couple years BB has had to be forcibly reminded over and over how valuable Counsell's (usually great) approach at the plate can be. In my mind, he is at least as guilty of not appreciating and thus not reinforcing plate discipline as the others mentioned.

But then, they NEVER put OBP on the Jumbotron.

Point well taken . . . Players know where "bread is buttered" and what stats are going to get them more PT and more $$$

It's no wonder we have so many hacking at first pitches hoping to blast the ball outta the park ...
