Kentucky Takes 'Great Offense' to Knight Statement

Apr 19, 4:49 PM (ET)

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Bob Knight is taking aim at Kentucky coach John Calipari once again.

The Hall of Fame coach blasted Calipari's habit of recruiting players who spend just a year on campus before bolting for the NBA during a speaking engagement in Indiana over the weekend.

During his remarks Knight claimed several players on Kentucky's 2009-10 roster did not attend class during the spring semester.

"Kentucky the year before last started five players in the NCAA tournament games that had not been to class that semester," Knight said. "That's that one-and-done philosophy."

The Wildcats went 35-3 that season, falling to West Virginia in the NCAA's East Regional final. Kentucky started three freshmen - John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins and Eric Bledsoe - in the game as well as sophomore forward Darius Miller and junior forward Patrick Patterson.

Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart responded on Monday evening, saying the school took "great offense" to Knight's "blatantly erroneous" accusations.

"Academic performance has always been a priority at UK," Barnhart said in a statement. "It's unfortunate that, although every starter from the 2010 season finished the spring semester in good academic standing, these myths exist."

Wall, Cousins, Bledsoe, Patterson and freshman center Daniel Orton all left school after the season and became first-round NBA draft selections.......

Since when does a guy who chokes players, throws chairs, and generally bullies everyone around him able to consider himself the moral compass of college basketball?

The real problem is Knight was wrong. Patterson graduated and the other 4 were eligible although Knight is likely correct that they weren't really serious students(we know Bledsoe wasn't).

the problem is Knight had a good point but because he claimed something that turns out to not be true, he actually made Calipari look good.

I like Knight as an announcer but agree he's went a bit too far, if you're going to say something like that you should be sure you're actually right.

Knight's a jerk, but he graduated a lot of his players, IIRC.

the funny thing is today Brandin Knight is one of 3 UK players who announced they're going pro(no agent). Brandin Knight had been rumored to want to stay, apparently Cal told him he'd move off PG this year if he came back because of freshman Marquis Teague, that's why Knight went pro. Also rumor is terrence Jones was considering staying with the possible lockout, and calipari pushed him to go pro.

Because he's got this one and done rotation, if kids like Knight and Jones decide to stay, it screws up the incoming class and he is promising kids they will start from day 1, so it will hurt recruiting. So everyone else is trying to keep kids in college and Cal is running them off.

Remember last year he announced Patterson was leaving and his mom or dad came out and complained they were mad because he hadn't made up his mind yet and the coach was pushing him to leave.
