The Arizona Diamondbacks and JPMorgan Chase & Co. have delayed plans to rename downtown Phoenix's baseball stadium until next year, with updated signs likely going up after the regular 2005 season concludes early next fall.
"This next season we will play at Bank One Ballpark again," said Rich Dozier, Diamondbacks president, after a conference call with bank officials Monday. The delay heightens speculation over what Arizonans eventually will call one of the Valley's landmarks. "Chase" almost certainly will be in the name; that's what the bank's branches will be called.
Efforts to rename the ballpark were put in motion by the midyear acquisition of Bank One by JPMorgan.
"What we're trying to do is make it a significant event," said Ben Campbell, the bank's Arizona president. "We want to change the names of the branches, our other facilities and the ballpark simultaneously."
Dozier said the name may be announced before the new signs go up, possibly before Opening Day, but Campbell said his company hopes to do it all at once, later in the year.
Bank officials have selected a new stadium name but haven't signed off on the logo or color scheme, he said.
