Through every challenge in his long career at Syracuse University, Jim Boeheim has survived. From NCAA sanctions two decades ago to the Bernie Fine scandal four years ago, always deflecting questions about when he might retire and indicating it would be on his own terms. Almost two weeks after a scathing NCAA report, the university announced Wednesday that the 70-year-old Boeheim would retire after three more seasons. Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud said Boeheim decided to make the announcement to ''bring certainty to the team and program in the coming years'' and to allow for a smooth transition.
