Boldin Posts Record-Breaking Performance
Rookie wide receiver Anquan Boldin earned his first Pro Bowl selection on Thursday, December 18. He was the only rookie selected for the 2004 Pro Bowl and in if anyone was questioning his selection, his record-breaking 10 reception, 122 yards peformance against the Seahawks on Sunday showed how special this receiver is.
Boldin’s fifth catch of the day, occurring midway through the third quarter, surpassed wide receiver Terry Glenn’s all-time rookie record for the most receptions in a single season. Always more concerned about winning rather than personal stats, Boldin hardly seemed phased by the record.
“I actually don’t know how many catches I had today,” the former Florida State wideout said. “I realized I broke the record. I guess it means a lot but right now it is kind of tough because I would like to have the win more.”
Head Coach Dave McGinnis even got emotional in his post-game press conference while talking about Boldin’s achievements.
“What else can you say? In the 18 years I’ve been in this league, I’ve been with some fabulous, fabulous football players. Some names that are known world-wide, Singletary, Hampton, Payton. But they all started out fundamentally with a tremendous base to them and Anquan Boldin, I promise you guys, he is going to be somebody that people can be proud of in this league for a long, long time,” offered McGinnis as his voice broke. “He set this record. There are a lot of records ahead out there for Anquan Boldin. The thing I love about him is, he’s proud of his accomplishments, but all he is about is winning football games. I absolutely love this young man. He is exactly what the National Football League is about.”
When much has been made of the recent excessive celebrations by receivers Chad Johnson and Joe Horne, Boldin broke the record and with refreshing simplicity, tossed the ball to one of the Cardinals equipment assistants and returned to the huddle.
“I’ll probably give it to my mom and let her keep it,” said Boldin of the record-breaking ball. “I know she would love to have it so that is her ball.”
Boldin currently has 96 catches on the season, which is just two receptions shy of a franchise record for the most catches in a season, set by former Cards receiver David Boston.
His performance against the Seahawks also included an impressive 60-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. He should have also been credited with a touchdown late in the first half. Following an interception by Renaldo Hill, the Cards had a short field to work with at the Hawks 45-yardline. Facing 1st and 15, McCown threw a 45-yard flea-flicker pass to Boldin right at the goal line. It appeared to be a touchdown, and although McGinnis challenged the play, officials upheld their ruling of an incomplete pass.
“I thought I was right outside of the endzone so when I caught it I tried to stretch it and make sure I was in the endzone but the ref said I didn’t have possession,” offered Boldin of the play. “I don’t know what he was looking at.”
“If I knew I was in the endzone (already), instead of reaching it out, I would have tucked it in,” he continued. “If I could have it back that is what I would have done. It clearly showed on the screen I had the ball and came down and when I stretched it out and it hit the ground, that is when it popped out.”
Even without the touchdown yardage, Boldin now needs only 123 yards to break the record set by Bill Groman in 1960 for all-time purpose yardage by a rookie. As usual, personal stats won’t be Boldin’s main objective when the Cards return home for their final game against the Minnesota Vikings next weekend.
“That is not going to be my focus going into the last game,” stated Boldin. “For me, I am just going out trying to win a game. I am going to go out Monday through Friday, work hard, and try to help this team win. God knows we need a win, and a positive note just to close the year out and hopefully carry over into next year.”
