The Boston Celtics closed out their road games in the regular season on Wednesday night, with an underwhelming performance as all of the main starters were sitting the game out. Boston's starting lineup saw Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser, Luke Kornet, Torrey Craig, and Baylor Scheierman take the court in a potential future playoff matchup against the Orlando Magic.
Dropping the game 96-76, the Celtics could clearly not get anything going offensively which should have been expected with the lineup that was out there for them. In what could've been viewed as a meaningless game for Boston, they'll end their road schedule with a franchise record with 33 wins, one shy of tying the Golden State Warriors for an NBA record.
Here's a quick recap of the Celtics' 20-point loss on Wednesday night:
Player availability: With the playoffs right around the corner, and their playoff seeding cemented as the No. 2 team in the Eastern Conference, Boston really had nothing to play for in this game. That excuse would be acceptable for most teams, but it's a given that head coach Joe Mazzulla was not happy with the lack of offensive production and is not a coach who will make excuses for any loss.
The painted area: On the second night of a back-to-back, the Celtics were once again outrebounded and outscored in points in the paint. The stats are obviously going to be a bit skewed with the lineups that were out there for each respective team, but losing in those areas on two straight nights is a concern. There are just two games left in the regular season, and even if the entire group of starters don't suit up, there has to be a better effort in the painted area.
The first of two matchups at home against the Charlotte Hornets, the Celtics will close out their season against former assistant coach Charles Lee and the rebuilding Hornets franchise. There shouldn't be much expectation on the top starters playing in either game as they look to prepare for the playoff stretch which is right around the corner.
