I'm suprised no one has said anything, In the Seattle game gary Bender mentioned the fact that danny was trying to get Paul Westphal to coach the celts, I liked westphal and thought he got a raw deal when he was axed after a poor start with his stars 2 injured.

Suns were arguably the best team in the league for 2-3 years, all they had to show for it was 1 finals appearance. I think he was treated more than fair.

2 or 3 years? maybe a half a season until Manning went down, they started out the next year with Barkley and K.J on the IR, Thats when he got axed.

Was reffering to the 3 previous years, '92/'93(finals) '93/'94(2nd round loss) '94/'95(2nd round loss). If Westphal was such a great coach why'd he burn out in Seattle too? Seems to me he didn't have control/respect of his star players and they were tuning him out. Can you tell me what made him such a great coach?

I have always thought Westphal was a good coach.

The concerns were loose reins on the players and not much defense.

Barkley was here, KJ, Majerle etc., the suns had good players.

The main reason the suns were coached well is that Barkley was here........ :D

You need the superstar to win it all..........!

Sorry what made him have a raw deal? The Suns gave him, someone without any headcoaching experience one of the most talented teams in the league. He underachieved with that team and lost his job how is that a raw deal?

I wonder if we had had a more strict coach if we could have won it all. I think we had the talent to...

There does not seem to be a perfect personality for coaching. Overly strict coaches often end up with the players rebelling or afraid to do anything. Overly lax coaches end up with players free lancing and not staying within the system.

I'm a big fan of disciplined teams, but they risk alienating elite players who are able to "make things happen". Jerry Sloan was fortunate in having super stars who were perfect for his system. But there are a lot of players that would struggle with his approach.

It is too early to tell how D'Antoni will work out. He has not had the entire team together yet. Stoudemire has played in two full practices in 9 weeks. Plus, Mike has been forced to work with the FJ offense since major changes are almost impossible in mid season.

Mike has the rest of the year to make me belive so far I don't like his line-ups or the full time trap.

I'm not a big fan of the trap either. It would be nice to know if:

a. He uses the trap because the Suns are usually behind.
b. He uses the trap because his big guys aren't very good.
c. He uses the trap because the Suns offense is weak and they need to generate fast breaks.
d. He uses the trap because he just likes to irritate us. :D

I think it's none of the above. He uses the trap because in Coaching 101, you learn that a trap is a way to "pick up the energy" and "get the other team out of its game."

The fact that it leads to easy layups by the other team and is a gimmick best suited to short-term use doesn't get taught until Coaching 102.

Cute.

Currently the Suns play relatively little man defense. They either play a passive zone or trap. Obviously the trap provides more energy, but good man defense should do the same thing.

I think the problem is that the Suns are not good enough at man defense. Voskuhl gets pushed around, Stoudemire does not have the footwork, Barbosa does not stay in front of his man properly, and Marion gets faked out of position at lot. JJ is the team's best defender, but he is not a "lock down" defender like Bruce Bowen and needs a lot of energy as the team's offensive leader.

In spite of this, I think the Suns should play mostly swtching man defense and accept the consequenses. They will never get better playing man defense if they aren't forced to play it and learn from their mistakes.

My solution to the defense is to get a 7 footer that can block shots, and then the other players can play whatever defense they want to..........

:D
