Allen sat down for three separate one-on-one interviews — with The Miami Herald, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and the Palm Beach Post — on Thursday to clear the air well before the season opener. He said the friction with Rondo began in 2009 when Rivers and Celtics president Danny Ainge proposed a trade that would have sent Allen and Rondo to Phoenix for Amare Stoudemire, Leandro Barbosa and the 14th overall pick in the 2010 draft.

Pretty interesting stuff.

Rondo and Allen for Amare, Barbosa, and Robin Lopez.

Hmmm. Can't imagine that Rondo would have done well on a team with Nash. Maybe we would have traded Nash sooner. Hard to know what would have happened AFTER such a trade.

It would have been hilarious to see KG grilling Amare for making a defensive error if that trade had happened.

Well of course the Suns could have drafted Rondo themselves if they had wanted him, so it's not surprising that they turned that trade down. And I think Rondo is overrated anyway, although clearly an asset the Suns shouldn't have passed on.

Consider that the trade would have meant trading Nash obviously.

It would have been a good deal though.

Actually the Suns did draft Rondo, but traded his rights to Boston later in the draft.

We'd be in better shape right now by virtue of having Rondo, but the 2010 playoff run obviously never happens. I wonder what we would have gotten for Nash had we traded him around the same time. Sending him to the Knicks for a good chunk of what they eventually gave up for Anthony would have been nice.

They drafted Rondo for Boston. Had they kept the pick, they would have very likely drafted someone else (Shannon Brown was rumored to have been their target).

I don't like Rondo because of his questionable character and attitude, but his value would have definitely been higher than what we have gotten in that trade. But of course the main motivation behind giving up that pick was to unload Brian Grant's contract, not to get any valuable assets in return.

Yes, that's the problem with trying to evaluate that trade in hindsight. I think it would have meant trading Nash earlier--unless the love affair the Suns have had with Nash would have meant Rondo coming off the bench (or being turned into a quasi 2 like Barbosa).

If they actually would have traded Nash sooner, then yes, it would have been a good trade.

This is what would have happened if the Suns had kept the pick.

Tony Wroten should be the next test case for drafting a player like Rondo.

This must have been prior to the 2009 draft when the Suns selected Earl Clark 14th. The Suns had no 1st rnd pick in 2010(Thunder got the 2nd of the 2 1sts the Suns gave them to dump KT that year).

Are you serious! That's the first I heard of that.
I didn't think anyone on here missed that. The way it was phrased was slightly misleading - the Suns didn't select Rondo. The trade was agreed upon before they drafted and, as always, the team receiving the pick selected the player. In this case the Suns might have chosen Rondo themselves because he was considered the BPA or very close to it.

The Suns could have selected and kept at #21 in the 2006 Draft, Rondo or Lowry or Shannon Brown. Of course the Suns did not keep their picks in the draft. Even Sergio Rodriguez was sold at #27. I guess the Suns eventually got Shannon Brown in a roundabout way.

Here is a link to that draft.

LOL! I didn't think I needed the sarcasm smilie for my post. Suns fans, including me have been lamenting that trade for years on this board.

The problem is that so many people are genuinely clueless, it's impossible to make a joke by pretending to be clueless. Because I know that Folster knows what he's talking about, I knew that he was making a joke, but if an unfamiliar poster had written exactly the same thing, I would have figured he was probably an idiot.
