You just beat me to it! Yea this was a great article. Nice to see so many great pieces on this defense. If Keim drafts a pass rusher or a ball-hawking safety, this defense will become as scary as Seattle and San Fran (if it hasn't already).

Excellent article!

The Cardinals finish up with games against St. Louis, at Tennessee, at Seattle, and home against the 49ers. They’ve got a legitimate shot at a wild-card spot, knowing full well that they’ll go as far as their defense can take them.

In the Cardinals’ case, that’s less a statement of hope, and more a threat for upcoming opponents.

I really like that last statement!

It is going to be really, really interesting to see who wins the chess match between Chip Kelly and Todd Bowles. As much as I love Nick Foles - and wish to hell we could have him on our roster - I am not sure he has seen a defense like this before, and we will likely see a lot of balls thrown out of bounds. The one thing about that kid is, he just doesn't throw picks or force things.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see us be the team who gets him to finally throw a pick or four. I just have watched him enough to know it's unlikely, however, three and out is very doable.

Nice informative article! When you get Greg Cosell's praise you know you're doing well. He's knows his stuff.

“It’s like a million pounds off your shoulders,” Dockett, a 10-year veteran and three-time Pro Bowler, said in May. “Personally, I had nothing against Ray. But I hated that scheme. I really hated it. I played it because I needed to. But this defense is based on guys and what their ability allows them to be good at. What they were drafted for.”

Dockett had five total sacks in his two years under Horton, as opposed to 12 in the two seasons before. Through 11 games in 2013, he has 4.5.

“Darnell and myself, I feel like we have the ability to make a lot of different plays, but sometimes in the 3-4 you have to put the team in front of yourself,” Campbell added. “This defense, the way we are doing things, it gives us a chance to make a difference.”

This is the most interesting part to me.

Hope, with great players, sometimes equal huge success. Our defense has been better than I can remember. To READ other people givng us praise just reinforces what we see every Sunday with this group!

theyve been saying that since day 1

Agreed.
I just never understood why teams or coaches (i.e. Horton) do not adjust their schemes to fit the player. You get these coaches who are so full of themselves or the system that they try and make the player fit the scheme. Even though Horton's defenses produced some results, it was a waste of talent to have DD and CC just occupying blockers instead of penetrating and making plays.
It goes for offense as well. The end zone corner fade or jump ball pass to Fitz is virtually unstoppable and I don't think Whiz ever called in the last several years. Last week was a prime example of it.

I dont think horton needed to adjust his scheme. His sheme is more LB friendly and Dwash had a monster year at the expense of DD. CC did just fine.

I'm pretty sure he did. Check the stat sheets under 'interceptions'

i fully expect the cardinals to win one for todd just like they won one for bruce last week,
you couldn't ask for a better time to be peaking as a team right now, it would have been nice to have had everything down pact scheme wise right out of camp but its not how you start that matters its how you finish
and i am excited as hell over how this season is playing out

From 1995 through 2010 the Cardinals ranked better than 22nd in points allowed only twice. With Horton and Bowles they're on pace to be better than 18th three seasons in a row.

Something the Cards haven't done since 1974,75 and '76!

:koolaid:

Of course they've done it playing a bunch of weak offenses. :stick:

I didnt read it, but my position on this D is pretty clear cut.

Bowles is a good coach. I had major hangups when he first signed on, but I give him nothing but respect now.

This D is 35% Bowles, 65% the talent we have. PP, Powers( whos a solid #2), great D line, great LBs corps.

Look at Horton. Hes a great DC, yet his D in Cleveland is good, not great like ours was last year. Because hes missing the talent level we have.

Horton is in the same situation in Cleveland he was in Arizona. His D is 3rd in net yards per attempt allowed passing and 2nd in rushing yards per attempt but the Browns offense is so bad they're only 18th in points allowed.

No QB wants to face this defense because we make their team one-dimensional. That's when QBs really start taking punishment.

In reference to what it takes to win, Barry Switzer used to say:

"its not your x's and o's, its your jimmys and your joes".

However that's not really true. Texas for instance has had plenty of talented jimmy's and joe's and due to poor coaching they've underachieved for several years now. Evidenced by how well their players do in the NFL once they get away from the Longhorn coaches. You really see it in High School football where a coach wins year after year with different players.

I like this cliche better. "He could take his and beat yours and then take yours and beat his."

Good point Chief. No doubt both coaching and talent important.

You think Mack is done?

Yes. His 5 year exemption for winning a title ran out in 2011 and his teams have underachieved for too long and the big cigars are not happy. There is the possibility of a miracle occuring and UT beating both Tech and Baylor and OU winning the Bedlam game saving Mack's job but the odds on that are long. I don't know who they'd get to take the job as the QB position is in severe disarray but for $4-5 million a year maybe it won't matter.

Of course you have to remember that Texas sports is about making money not winning games. Evidence of this it that they have a statue of a trial lawyer booster next to the statue of DKR at the stadium.

It's like the old Cardinals. Making money and having a clean image were more important than winning football games.
