Sports UpdateCoyotes trade Mara for Boynton By Matt Paulson, TribuneJune 27, 2006Feeling the need to add more grit, the Coyotes on Monday acquired rugged defenseman Nick Boynton from the Boston Bruins in exchange for Paul Mara, their top-scoring blue-liner each of the past two seasons.Related LinksSports
Phoenix also dealt a thirdround draft pick in either 2007 or ’08 and received Boston’s fourthround choice in ’07.
Boynton, 27, has spent four full seasons in the NHL — all with the Burins — and in 299 career games has tallied 22 goals, 62 assists and 397 penalty minutes.
His best year came in 2003-04, when he compiled six goals and 24 assists in 81 games and was a member of the Eastern Conference All-Star team.
Last season, Boynton was slowed by injuries and had trouble early adjusting to the new NHL rules. He finished with five goals, seven assists and 93 penalty minutes in 54 games.
The 6-foot-2, 211-pounder, who is not afraid to throw his body around, missed 13 games in December and January due to a broken knee cap and the last seven games of the season due to a shoulder injury that required surgery. (Boynton said he should be 100 percent by training camp.) He also missed the first four games of the season in a contract holdout.
“I couldn’t be happier,” Boynton said in a phone interview from Bermuda, where he is vacationing.
“It was a long, tough year in Boston. I wish them well, but I’m really excited to be starting over.”
Boynton, who made $1.7 million last season, is a restricted free agent. Coyotes general manager Mike Barnett said he hopes to sign the native of Nobleton, Ontario, to a long-term contract soon.
“We had some discussions with his agent today, and I’m optimistic we’ll get him signed to something longer than a one-year deal, hopefully by the weekend,” said Barnett, who began talks with Boston about a Mara-for-Boynton deal at Saturday’s draft.
Mara, who is from Boston, is coming off a career year in which he finished with personal highs in goals (15) and points (47).
“It’s definitely tough leaving there, but coming home to Boston is a dream come true,” said Mara, who was with the Coyotes for four seasons.
Barnett said the deal helps the Coyotes in two ways.
“We felt that we needed more of a physical presence on our back end,” he said. “This move certainly gives us a rugged, physical, young defenseman in Boynton, but it also frees us up to spend some of the money we intend to on an offensively oriented forward.”
Mara, 27, is a restricted free agent.
SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED
The Stanley Cup runner-up Edmonton Oilers and Pacific Division rivals Dallas Stars and Anaheim Ducks will be the Coyotes’ preseason opponents.
The Coyotes’ first game will be Sept. 17 against Edmonton in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the franchise’s former home. It will be the organization’s first game in the city since moving to the Valley in 1996.
Phoenix will also hold training camp in San Antonio from Sept. 21-23 and play an intersquad game there against the Rampage, its AHL affiliate, on the 23rd.
The full schedule will be released in July and single-game tickets will go on sale in August.
LOOSE PUCK
With new Vancouver Canucks coach Alain Vigneault opting not to retain any of the previous staff’s assistants, former Coyotes coach Rick Bowness, a longtime friend, is expected to fill one of the two openings.
Bowness was an associate coach with the Coyotes the past seven seasons and also served as interim coach for the final two months of the 2003-04 campaign. His contract was not renewed following this season.
Vigneault was an assistant coach under Bowness in Ottawa in the 1990s.
