Class 5A

Semifinals Friday, March 21

(12-1) Neumann-Goretti 79, (1-4) Upper Moreland 53: The Golden Bears had their moments but couldn't overcome explosive Neumann-Goretti, ending UM's state playoff run. N-G led by as many as 21 points (58-37) late in the third quarter, 20 (63-43) at the end of the period, then by 28 in the fourth period. Senior senior Jadon Cybok led UM with 16 points and senior Colson Campbell added 14. Junior Stephon Ashley-Wright scored 22 points and junior Alassan N'Diaye had 17 for N-G.

N-G was ahead by 14 (22-8) late in the first quarter. UM rallied to within four (27-23) a little over two minutes into the second period, only for N-G to extend its edge to 12 before Colson Campbell beat the halftime buzzer with a 3-pointer to make it 43-34 at the break.

UM (24-8) secured its first league championship (SOL Freedom) since 1982-83 and became the first UM boys team to win a state playoff game (it had three). N-G (18-11) has won five in a row after going 7-6 in the Catholic League, falling to eventual PCL tournament champ Father Judge in the quarterfinals. It downed Bonner-Prendie 93-77 during the PCL regular season.

(3-1) Hershey 64, (7-1) Chartiers Valley 50

Quarterfinals March 14

(1-4) Upper Moreland 46, (12-3) Bonner-Prendergast 45:Upper Moreland did it again. Senior Colson Campbell's free throw with 34.8 seconds remaining, followed by Bonner-Prendie's Jakeem Carroll missing a runner and junior Larry Hughesgrabbing the rebound resulted in another narrow state playoff victory for Dan Heiland's resilient team.

A driving basket by UM junior guard Nate Best (10 points), a pair of free throws by freshman Cannon Campbell and a foul shot by Colson Campbell had completed an 11-0 run and gave the Golden Bears a 45-40 lead with 1:23 remaining. Bonner-Prendie scored the next five points to tie it at 45, setting the stage for the dramatic ending and the Bears' joyous celebration at Norristown.

"It's insane," said Colson Campbell, who had a team-high 21 points. "If you told me at the beginning of the year we'd be in the final four at states, my mind would be blown. ... We just crawled back the whole game and fought, fought, fought."

After leading 6-4, the Bears (24-7) weren't ahead again until 42-40 on Best's layup with 2:51 left. They trailed by as many as nine points (24-15) late in the second quarter and still by six (40-34) early in the fourth. Bonner-Prendie helped the UM cause by missing its final five free throws of the third period and had just two made field goals in the fourth quarter.

The Bears had never won a state playoff game coming into the postseason and now have three victories heading into the March 21 semifinal against Neumann-Goretti. Bonner-Prendie (18-8) went 7-6 in the rugged Philadelphia Catholic League on the way to its 22-point second-round victory over District One champ Upper Dublin, which had won 28 in a row.

(12-1) Neumann-Goretti 76, (1-5) Penncrest 69 (OT): Junior DeShawn Yates tallied a game-high 34 points for N-G and converted 9 of 10 free throws in overtime. He also had 5 assists and 5 steals.

UM overcame a 23-4 YS run in the middle two periods that turned a 24-13 lead into a 36-28 deficit as well as York Suburban junior Kane Strhyn's banked 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in regulation that forced OT.

Upper Moreland scored eight of the 10 points in the extra session, with senior Colson Campbell accounting for five. Campbell and freshman brother Cannon Campbell each had eight points. "It feels amazing, honestly," Hughes said. "Knowing that our group is the first to ever (win state playoff games) in Upper Moreland history is an unreal feeling."

The Bears became the second boys' team in school history to win 20 games, joining the 1982-83 UM squad (25-6). York Suburban (20-9) downed District 12 runner-up Frankford 78-59 in the first round.

(1-5) Penncrest 68, (1-2) Holy Ghost Prep 54: HGP (20-8) couldn't get past Central League champion Penncrest for a second time in the postseason. Holy Ghost held a 13-7 lead after one quarter, but Penncrest tied it up by halftime and made its move in the third period. The Firebirds received 18 points from senior Adrien Varella and 16 by senior Zak Sharlin.

HGP had topped Penncrest 52-48 in overtime in the District One quarterfinals in a game in which they didn't lead until Sharlin's 3-pointer with 40 seconds left in OT. Varella led Holy Ghost with 16 points at districts vs. Penncrest (23-3), which split with District One 6A top seed Lower Merion and defeated district 6A playoff champ Conestoga. First round March 7

(1-4) Upper Moreland 60, (2-1) Abington Heights 57: The Golden Bears (22-7) won the school's first boys state playoff game by downing host Abington Heights. Senior Jadon Cybok led UM with 20 points, including six 3-pointers. Junior Larry Hughes contributed 16 points, senior Colson Campbell had 12 and junior Nate Best9.

Upper Moreland had been 0-4 in the state playoffs, dropping PIAA first-round games in 1983, 2006, ’13 and 2022. "It means a lot because it has never been done before," Campbell said. "Everyone knew the game was winnable and we had a shot to do it. It feels amazing to put our names in the UM record books."

Abington Heights (14-11) downed top-seeded Pittston 53-48 for its third straight District 2 5A title.

(3-4) York Suburban 78, (12-2) Frankford 59

(1-2) Holy Ghost Prep 62, (3-5) Lampeter-Strasburg 57: Senior Adrien "Ace" Varella led the Firebirds (20-7) with 26 points in a game at Bensalem, while senior Zak Sharlin added 15 and junior Adam McDonald had 9 points. Holy Ghost used a 15-1 run to turn a nine-point deficit (26-17) into a 32-27 halftime lead, then held off Lampeter-Strasburg down the stretch by hitting 6 of 8 free throws over the final 40.2 seconds. "I think we started getting up in them more on defense (in the second quarter), forcing turnovers and speeding them up because we like to play fast and they didn't," McDonald said. "We were just playing at our pace."

Varella became the school's No. 2 all-time leading scorer in the game with 1,224 career points, surpassing Chuck Mitchell (1,212, 1968-71). Varella only trails Frank Weiss (1,487, 1967-69). "He knows what he's capable of doing and he knows he's the best player every time he walks on the court," said Holy Ghost Prep second-year head coach Tom Heston, who won his first state playoff game. "He does so much for us and I ask so much of him."

HGP had advanced to the District One title game vs. loaded Upper Dublin with wins over Springfield-Montco, No. 2 Penncrest and third-seeded Pottsgrove. Varella averaged 19.3 points in the three district contests for Holy Ghost against the top three seeds.
