I just saw that. It makes me a little sad, though I guess he has been finished here for a while.

He should be arrested for theft.

Yep good riddance to this clown. Missing season after season to injuries and then he assures the Dbacks he can go last year but then just before the season starts;

"Oh I cant play this year because I have to learn how to pitch all over again cuz I might hurt myself again."

Screw Brandon Webb. Just his attitude in interviews the past couple of years pissed me off.

"Brandon the Doctors have cleared you to play so when are you going to start throwing?"

'Well uhh, my arm still kinda hurts and I stubbed my toe last month and it's still pretty sore so I'm not going to rush anything. I still need to get a 5th and 6th opinion before I do anything. I really doubt I'll be pitching anytime soon. Plus I've got to consult the oujia board before I make any big decisions..'

I'm using hyperbole obviously but that's really how his attitude has been. I've never seen a top athlete be so completely disinterested in rehabbing and getting back on the mound he always sounded perfectly content to sit out and get paid millions to do it. I have 0 respect for Brandon Webb. Based off comments I've heard Mark Grace say on the air I'd say that nobody else in the Diamondbacks organization does either.

I have no ill will to Webb. He gave the D-Backs some great years. Yes he has been hurt the past two years but we signed him to an extremely team friendly deal. It was something like 5 years for $27 million. Look at it like a 3 year deal and we still only paid him $9 mil a year. I can never fault anyone who gets hurt (unless they did something stupid). We never made an offer to Webb this off-season so I really can't be upset with him not signing him. I hope he is able to regain his former form but I doubt he ever will. I look forward to seeing him pitch in some point in the future.

Yeah - screw the guy who anchored your rotation and won a cy young here ....... how dare he get hurt and have a team exercise their option on him ..... i'm sure any team doctor who came near him he jabbed with a very pointy stick just to conceal his injury so he could get paid

He signed for 4 years with a guaranteed $19.5M ..... for that $5M per year the club received the followings

2006 - won the Cy Young award
2007 - went 18-10 with a 3.01 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 194 SOs and pitched 236 innings
2008 - went 22-7 with a 3.3 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP (2nd in Cy Young voting)
2009 - injured

So even if you take away 2009 that is roughly $6.5M per year - which is an absolute bargain for a guy who pitched 30+ games and over 225 inning each year with a whip under 1.2 and ERA in the very low 3s

No one held a gun to the D'backs heads to pick up the $8.5M team option

Yeah he was awesome and he got paid for his work then.

He didn't get paid to sand bag a season away with his piss poor conditioning, empty promises, and lack of toughness. He flat stole from the DBacks last year, especially when he was cleared to pitch and couldn't dignify the mound with his presence.

It would be the equivalent of taking a big bonus and then no showing for a week at work.

How can you say he had poor conditioning and sandbagged the season? With a bum shoulder no pitcher can be good. It is physically impossible. While being clear does not mean you are able to go out and perform too. He sat out a long period of time and his mechanics got out of whack. Part of his problem stemmed from his mechanics in the first place. He was trying to change them so he would be able to pitch again and he was unable to do it in the time he was in Arizona.

Not at all - he got paid before he had his best years ... it's not like he collected his contract and then disappeared

he collected his contract and then dominated as one of the best pitchers in the NL

the guy then blew out his shoulder (in part from being such a workhorse and taking the ball every 5th game for his career) and then had setbacks

he didn't pitch his 4th season

missed an entire year

what made the d'backs so confident that webb would be able to pitch the 5th ..... what makes you think it's webbs decision on what he can do?

it's pretty clear the doctors and/or front office screwed the pooch on this one

i don't know how you blame a player for having a team exercise a large $$ option, after missing an entire year due to injury and then continuing to be injured ........... this goes squarely on the FO & doctors

they could of easily of said it was too much risk, or easily of said we'd like to give you go, but not for that $$$ amount

but they didn't

they exercised their option ... he didn't exercise it ... he didn't force their hand .... he didn't make them

their doctors and front office decided that was a smart idea

it wasn't

not his fault

he definitely didn't steal a dime of that contract though

complete bargain for what he did provide

furthermore, the guy threw 1,315 innings over his first 6 seasons ......... you can't do that if you lack toughness ..... that's a pretty good innings load

that's roughly the same amount of innings that halladay has thrown over the prior 6 ..... more than sabathia has thrown over any 6 year span in his career

he flat out played ball

it's kind of sad to see so much blasting of a guy who did everything the right way while he was playing, went through some of the tougher times in the teams history without complaint and was often one of the lone bright spots get completely bashed because he got injured

Totally agree. The bashing is just stupid.

It was time for him to go. We got him for his best years and I doubt he will ever be the same guy again. His injury history allows us to part ways without a big backlash against the team, so I guess that is good.

I will be real curious to see how he fares in the upcoming year. If he starts 20 games and has a .500 winning percentage, I'd call that a victory for Webb and Texas.
