It's true. KVOA channel 4 just reported it during its sports segment. Congratulations Brandon.

Yes they do, 2 actually, 1 for offensive ROY and 1 for defensive ROY!

I am not seeing this up on any website - they usually don't announce these until AFTER the World Series is over.

I hope he does win it - he deserves to - but I think the radio is jumping the gun.

It would be a shame to announce it now, anyway - the spotlight is on the World Series.

Its possible that they may have jumped the gun or its possible that they heard this from a valid source.

Remember that the news leaked out about Amare being NBA ROY about a week in advance. So its difficult to tell at this point.

It is probably a leak - which is too bad, in many ways. I want Brandon to have the full spotlight if he wins.

It's not the big one yet

PHOENIX -- Brandon Webb received his first accolade of the offseason Wednesday when he was named Rookie of the Year for all of Major League Baseball by Baseball America.
It's good to see Brandon get this recognition from Baseball America.

I thought I heard it announced during Tuesday night's World Series game that Sporting News picked Willis as NL Rookie Pitcher of the Year.

None of these awards are the big one.

It will be November before the Jackie Robinson NL Rookie of the Year is named. So it's a little early for us to hold our breaths . . . but we can hope.

baseball-almanac.com gives a full explanation of the official NL and AL Rookie of the Year selections.

The Rookie of the Year Award, or Jackie Robinson Award as it became known in 1987, is given to the individual player from each League who has the best rookie season; pitching, hitting or fielding, that is during his first year of eligibility.

In 1947 and 1948, only one winner was selected from the Major Leagues. From 1949 on, two players have been selected each year one coming from each league, respectively.

Since 1980 the members of the Baseball Writers Association of America have named three rookies on their ballots. A first place place vote equals 5 points, second place equals 3 points, and third place gets 1 point. Those points are totaled and the winner is announced at the completion of the season.

Eligibility requirements were set forth in 1971 and a rookie was formally defined as a player with less than one-hundred thirty at-bats, a pitcher with less than fifty innings pitched, or anyone with less than forty-five days on any Major League roster.

When the award was initiated in 1947, and there was only one winner from both leagues, Jackie Robinson was the one. That's why it was named for him sixteen years ago.

Baseball America and the Sporting News name their choices, but the winner of the NL and AL Rookie of the Year awards won't be named until next month.

The three "preliminary" ROY awards named before the "official" ROY named by the Baseball Writers of America have been evenly split between Webb, Willis, and Podsednik. The vote is certain to be close... but in essence is really insignificant, as far as affecting what will happen on the field in the next several years.
