... since Owings won't be up here long.
With a Minor League ERA of just under '5' this season, I think you're right.

Micah must be dedicated to pitching, but hasn't it been obvious to him that his potential in the Major Leagues as a 1B or outfielder has been greater than as a pitcher?

I'm sure he has discussed it with the teams he's been on.

Gibson said he's bringing him up for today's start because of his pitching and hitting. But before he was traded, was it Melvin or Hinch (I don't remember) who said he would get some playing time at 1B, but it never happened.

We really don't need him at 1B now that the D'backs have finally broken up the logjam by releasing Branyan, who was a bust as a pinch hitter -- not one successful pinch hit all season.

Perhaps if Owings pitches well today, Gibson is planning him as our power hitting pinch hitter off the bench between starts. I just don't see those starts keeping him with us for long.

Well Zach Duke is coming off the DL in time for the May 28th start (Galarraga's next after today) so we only needed a guy to plug in today. Owings will probably be the first guy to come up should an injury happen or Duke sucks.

The second of the D'Backs offseason acquisitions no longer with the team. Mora, Blanco, Nady, Duke & Blum are on notice, only Bloomquist has been a decent signing. The only saving grace is that most of the big ticket FA's from the offseason haven't justified their huge contracts so its not the D'Backs missed out. They need to hit a HR with the draft in a couple of weeks but are in a great position to come away with 2 big pieces at #3 & #7.

Mora and Nady are playing well, Blanco is starting to produce decently for a backup catcher, and Blum hasn't played yet. So i completely disagree with you. The signings have been huge. And you conveniently forget the bullpen additions that have been the difference for the D-Backs this year.
