Left-handed reliever Craig Breslow and the Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to a one-year contract worth $1,795,000, a deal that avoided salary arbitration.

'Sorry guys, but I cringe when I read that. One-million, seven-hundred and ninety-five thousand dollars in a year for a relief pitcher with a W-L record of 12-17 with six saves in five years, without arbitration.

A person earning $70,000 per year wouldn't earn that much in twenty-five years. It is obscene. But, oh yes, he is a lefty.

Wins and losses mean nothing for a relief pitcher. Trevor Hoffman has a career record 61-75. Also since he isn't a closer he doesn't get many save opportunities. Breslow avoided arbitration. He is in his 2nd year of arb so his salary is going to be more than the league minimum. It really isn't that high.

I wasn't singling him out. I'm referring to sports in general.

A salary $1,795,000 for a mediocre ballplayer for one year isn't that high? That is the problem.

Compared to teachers and cops and firemen and doctors and nurses -- people who really perform a service for the population.

Boy, do we pay to be entertained!

Eh, it doesn't bother me. Supply and demand. Once people decide they don't want to watch baseball (hopefully that never happens) these guys will have to get jobs just like us.
