PHOENIX – Nestor Cortes started the first game of the season last year at Yankee Stadium. This time around, he’ll pitch the season’s second game there.
Cortes will slot in as the Milwaukee Brewers’ No. 2 starter in the rotation order to begin the year, following opening day starter Freddy Peralta, manager Pat Murphy announced over the weekend, lining up the veteran left-hander to face the team that traded him in the off-season.
“I’m excited,” Cortes said. “I’m excited to be the second starter of the season and pitch in New York and hopefully dominate.”
Cortes will be at home in the Bronx despite wearing the visiting grays on March 29. In 44 starts and 65 total games at Yankee Stadium, Cortes owns a 3.21 career earned run average, 1.046 WHIP and 294 strikeouts to only 74 walks.
The 30-year-old was the Yankees opening day starter a year ago when Gerrit Cole was sidelined with an elbow injury, so he knows what the ballpark will be like even on the second day of the season.
“Electric,” Cortes said. “I’ve been part of a few of them. I always told myself when I become a big-leaguer and I’m in the big leagues year-in, year-out that I wouldn’t want to miss an opening day for anything. It’s a special moment. As a baseball player those are the moments you live for.”
Cortes said he has known he’s in line to start against his old mates since he got to camp, but couldn’t put it in ink until the day got closer because his spring schedule consistent of more unknowns than usual as he was recovering from a left elbow flexor strain suffered last last year.
But now that he’s officially marked down to pitch against the Yankees, which ex-teammate is he most excited to face?
The answer is plural.
“Everybody,” he said.
