Broncos part ways with CB Walls

NFL.com wire reports

DENVER (Nov. 1, 2005) -- The Denver Broncos parted ways with cornerback Lenny Walls, a surprising move that signaled their confidence in fast-improving rookies Darrent Williams and Domonique Foxworth.

The Broncos placed Walls, a fourth-year player who began the season as the starter opposite Champ Bailey, on the reserve-injured list, meaning they've agreed to a settlement with him and will officially release him in a few weeks.

Walls lost his starting job early in the season and missed the last game with an injured groin.

"That had nothing to do with it," coach Mike Shanahan said of the injury. "It's just the play of some of our younger guys."

Williams, a second-round pick, has emerged as a starter for Denver. Foxworth, a third-round pick, has become the team's primary nickel back. Last Sunday against Philadelphia, he made a key interception in Denver's 49-21 victory.

I think Walls is their very big CB, right?

IMO, we ought to take a hard look at him. Hell, we ought to be taking a hard look at anyone who isn't on our roster.

Yeah he's the 6'4" guy, and I agree he's worth bringing in, for now at CB, later to convert to FS. There's been a lot of guys on the broncosfreak board over the last year or so saying they were surprised Denver didn't move him to FS he's a step slow at CB but good enough an athlete that FS appears like a possible position.

he has been in the league 4 years? Does that mean that he would be a FA and not subject to the waiver wire?

Yup. Which is unfortunate for us at this point.

why?
Can't we afford to give him more $$ than most because we are still under the cap?

Because the chances of him giving Arizona first crack is pretty slim. You don't go from a 5-2 team to a 2-5 team by choice
