We know the Denver Broncos plan to select a running back in the NFL draft (they've said so directly), but history suggests the team might also explore other options.

Denver could sign a free agent veteran like J.K. Dobbins to complement a rookie, or they could trade for a running back. After hiring Sean Payton, the Broncos made draft-day trades in 2023 (tight end Adam Trautman) and 2024 (defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers).

Will the team trade for a running back this year?

One name to watch could be Breece Hall of the New York Jets. If they land Boise State's Ashton Jeanty with the seventh overall pick in the draft, the Jets might be willing to trade Hall, a hypothetical scenario that has been suggested by ESPN.

Hall, a former second-round pick, has one season left on his rookie contract, so a trade could be a one-year rental move. If the price is right, it might be worth it.

A similar scenario involves Atlanta Falcons running back Tyler Allgeier, who is also entering the final year of his deal. The Falcons might be willing to listen to offers for Allgeier with Bijan Robinson more than capable of filling an every-down role.

It's unknown what the Jets or Falcons would ask for in exchange for Hall and Allgeier, respectively, but Denver could boost its backfield by acquiring either RB this spring. Stay tuned. We will be tracking all of the team's draft picks and potential trades on Broncos Wire.
