As the Cleveland Browns look to continue to churn their roster from a 3-14 season a year ago, they could look to trade cornerback Greg Newsome II.
The team has not been gunshy on the trade market to this point. They have already traded away quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson to the Philadelphia Eagles in the deal to acquire former first round pick Kenny Pickett. Thompson-Robinson could be far from the only one to pack their backs this offseason.
Regarding Newsome, however, PFF has named the former 2021 NFL draft first round pick as the Browns' best trade asset this offseason. With Denzel Ward and Martin Emerson Jr. slated to start, the Browns have a few young cornerbacks on the roster who could take Newsome's slot in the nickel if the team decided to move on. They would likely turn to Cameron Mitchell or Myles Harden in this case (or just draft another one with one of their four top-100 picks in the 2025 NFL draft).
Here is what PFF had to say on the possibility of a Browns' trade of Newsome:
"The Northwestern product was strong throughout his first three pro seasons but took a step back in 2024, posting only a 54.0 PFF coverage grade with a 120.7 passer rating allowed when targeted. Newsome has seemingly been a constant in trade discussions, and that could amplify with him going into the last year of his rookie deal."
Entering the last year of his deal, the Browns could clear a massive $13 million off their books if they found a suitor for Newsome after picking up his fifth-year option. As the NFL continues to have an ever-growing need for more cornerbacks, there could be a team out there willing to take that price tag on. The Browns may also even be willing to eat a portion of the deal to essentially buy back a draft asset.
We'll see if the Browns see it through with Newsome on the last year of his deal or if will he be one of the next to pack his bags.
